Synergistic Lubricating Performance of h-BN/GF Nanoparticles as Oil Additives for Steel-Steel Contact

Shuai Li et al.

Summary: The major goal of this study is to investigate the synergistic lubricating performance of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and graphite fluoride (GF) nanoparticles in white oil. The tribological tests demonstrate that the addition of 0.1 wt% h-BN/GF can significantly reduce the friction coefficient, wear rate, and wear depth compared to white oil. Furthermore, the 0.1 wt% h-BN/GF nanocomposite exhibits the best lubrication and wear resistance performances compared to individual 0.1 wt% h-BN and 0.1 wt% GF. The research also reveals that the unique microstructure of the h-BN/GF composite and the weak interfacial interaction between h-BN and GF contribute to the formation of continuous and adhesive tribo-films at the interface.

Anomalous layer-dependent lubrication on graphene-covered substrate: Competition between adhesion and plasticity

Yongchao Chen et al.

Summary: Friction on few-layer graphene samples exhibits layer dependence, but the exact role of the interface and substrate plasticity in this layer dependence is not fully understood. Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to study the evolution trend of layer dependence under different normal loads. It was found that high interfacial adhesion affects the layer dependence. The frictional quality was evaluated by dividing the contact interface into adhesive and repulsive regions, and it was observed that the bilayer system shows higher friction in the low load stage but better lubrication and wear protection when the load induces substrate plasticity.

Lubrication of rough copper with few-layer graphene

Jianjun Bian et al.

Summary: Experiments and simulations have shown that friction decreases significantly when graphene is used as a solid lubricant on various materials, but the impact of increasing the number of graphene layers on lubrication is controversial. Atomistic simulations in this study reveal that increasing the number of graphene layers can drastically reduce friction and change the deformation mechanism.
