Chronic Immune Platelet Activation Is Followed by Platelet Refractoriness and Impaired Contractility

Izabella A. Andrianova et al.

Summary: Platelet dysfunction is a potential mechanism that contributes to hemostatic disorders in autoimmune diseases such as SLE. The activation and altered functionality of platelets in SLE patients, characterized by increased expression of phosphatidylserine and P-selectin, and impaired clot contraction, may lead to both thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications. This understudied pathogenic mechanism highlights the importance of further research in understanding platelet activation and dysfunction in autoimmune diseases.

The Dynamic Platelet Transcriptome in Obesity and Weight Loss

Marzieh Ezzaty Mirhashemi et al.

Summary: The study found significant changes in platelet gene expression after massive weight loss, while platelet function remained unchanged. These genes may be related to improved cardiometabolic risk, but showed no association with incident diabetes or cardiovascular endpoints. Further research is needed to clarify the mechanistic importance of these observations.

Platelets amplify endotheliopathy in COVID-19

Tessa J. Barrett et al.

Summary: The study reveals an inflammatory hypercoagulable state between platelets and endothelial cells in COVID-19, with platelet-released factors promoting endotheliopathy. S100A8, S100A9, and their protein product MRP8/14 are enriched in COVID-19 platelets and contribute significantly to poor clinical outcomes. Targeting platelet P2Y(12) appears to be a promising strategy for reducing proinflammatory platelet-endothelial interactions in COVID-19.
