Age-specific population attributable risk factors for all-cause and cause-specific mortality in type 2 diabetes: An analysis of a 6-year prospective cohort study of over 360,000 people in Hong Kong

Hongjiang Wu et al.

Summary: This study examined the risk factors for mortality in people with type 2 diabetes and found that these factors have different impacts on different age groups. The study found that suboptimal blood pressure control was the leading risk factor for mortality in younger individuals, while chronic kidney disease (CKD) was the leading risk factor for older individuals. Therefore, early control of blood pressure is crucial for reducing premature mortality in young people and preventing CKD and related mortality in older individuals.

Impaired insulin-stimulated myocardial glucose metabolic rate is associated with reduced estimated myocardial energetic efficiency in subjects with different degrees of glucose tolerance

Elena Succurro et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between insulin-stimulated myocardial glucose metabolic rate (MrGlu) and myocardial mechano-energetic efficiency (MEEi) in individuals with different degrees of glucose tolerance. The results showed a positive correlation between insulin-stimulated myocardial MrGlu and MEEi, and a decrease in MEEi associated with a decrease in myocardial MrGlu. These findings suggest that impaired insulin-stimulated myocardial glucose metabolism is an independent contributor to depressed myocardial MEEi in individuals without a history of coronary heart disease.

The National Clinical Care Commission Report to Congress: Leveraging Federal Policies and Programs for Population-Level Diabetes Prevention and Control: Recommendations From the National Clinical Care Commission

Dean Schillinger et al.

Summary: The etiology of type 2 diabetes is multifactorial, involving various individual, community, and societal factors and exposures that also affect type 1 and type 2 diabetes control. These factors can accumulate throughout the life course and include inadequate nutrition, lack of access to physical activity resources, chronic stress, and exposure to environmental toxins. The National Clinical Care Commission (NCCC) recognizes the importance of a societal approach to tackle the diabetes epidemic and emphasizes the need to design, leverage, and coordinate federal policies and programs to prevent and treat diabetes. The NCCC's population-wide recommendations address various aspects ranging from food systems to research, and have the potential to bring about transformative change in diabetes prevention and management.

Coronary Heart Disease in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Genetic Factors and Their Mechanisms, Gene-Gene, and Gene-Environment Interactions in the Asian Populations

Khairul Anwar Zarkasi et al.

Summary: Asians are more susceptible to type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease complications compared to Western populations, possibly due to genetic factors, obesity, insulin resistance, and endothelial dysfunction. Genetic factors play a significant role in energy and lipoprotein metabolism, vascular and endothelial pathology, antioxidation, and gene-environment interactions can modify the disease risk. These factors highlight the complexities of coronary heart disease in type 2 diabetes Asian populations.

Effect of mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants on glycaemic control, cardiovascular health, and oxidative stress in humans: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Shaun Andrew Mason et al.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the effects of mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants (mitoAOXs) on glycaemic control, cardiovascular health, and oxidative stress outcomes in humans. The results show that although mitoAOXs are generally well tolerated in the short term, there is currently limited evidence to support their use in the management of glycaemic control and cardiovascular health.

Serum Hepcidin, the Hepcidin/Ferritin Ratio and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Nahid Karamzad et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis did not find a significant difference in serum hepcidin levels between patients with type 2 diabetes and healthy controls, but the hepcidin/ferritin ratio was found to be negatively associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes. Publication bias was not found for the associations serum hepcidin or the hepcidin/ferritin ratio had with type 2 diabetes.
