Targeted metabolomics analysis of amino acids and acylcarnitines as risk markers for diabetes by LC-MS/MS technique

Shaghayegh Hosseinkhani et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the association between the levels of amino acids and acylcarnitines and diabetes in order to develop predictive models. The results showed that some amino acids and acylcarnitines were positively associated with diabetes, while others showed a reverse trend. These findings provide insights into the disturbances in metabolic pathways among the diabetic population and can be targeted for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes.

Characteristic MicroRNAs Linked to Dysregulated Metabolic Pathways in Qatari Adult Subjects With Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome

Fayaz Ahmad Mir et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between circulating miRNAs and clinical features in obese individuals. The results showed that there are certain miRNAs associated with metabolic syndrome in obese individuals, which may have a pathophysiologic role and can serve as markers for obese individuals predisposed to various metabolic diseases like diabetes.

Dysregulated Metabolic Pathways in Subjects with Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome

Fayaz Ahmad Mir et al.

Summary: This study found differential expression of serum metabolites and pathways between Arabic subjects with obesity and metabolic syndrome compared to subjects with obesity only. Lipids, including sphingomyelin, were significantly decreased in the group with metabolic syndrome. Non-lipid metabolites, such as quinolinate, kynurenine, and tryptophan, were also decreased in the group with metabolic syndrome. Metabolites and pathways associated with chronic inflammation were found to be dysregulated in subjects with metabolic syndrome.

Immune-related 3-lncRNA signature with prognostic connotation in a multi-cancer setting

Shimaa Sherif et al.

Summary: We identified an immune-related 3-lncRNA signature with prognostic connotation in multiple solid cancer types, which performed equally well and in some cases better than the 20-gene ICR signature, indicating that it could be used as a minimal informative signature for clinical implementation.

Circulating microRNA Related to Cardiometabolic Risk Factors for Metabolic Syndrome: A Systematic Review

Paula N. Brandao-Lima et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines the relationships between circulating microRNA and risk factors for Metabolic Syndrome (MetS), and identifies several microRNAs that are strongly associated with MetS risk factors. Circulating microRNA is upregulated in individuals with MetS risk factors and correlates with glycemic, lipid, and adiposity markers.

Biallelic Variants in the COLGALT1 Gene Causes Severe Congenital Porencephaly A Case Report

Mariel W. A. Teunissen et al.

Summary: We describe a third patient with biallelic pathogenic variants in COLGALT1, confirming the role of this gene in autosomal recessive BSVD3. The patient presented antenatally with porencephaly on ultrasound and MRI, and postnatally showed severe developmental delay, refractory epilepsy, spastic quadriplegia, and progressive hydrocephalus. Whole exome sequencing (WES) revealed a homozygous canonical splice site variant NM_024656.3:c.625-2A>C.

Summary: An active T-helper 1/cytotoxic response in different tumors is associated with immunotherapy responsiveness and favorable prognosis. However, in some cancers, intratumoral immune activation does not prevent progression or relapse. Defining mechanisms of immune evasion is crucial for refining stratification algorithms, guiding treatment decisions, and identifying candidates for immune-targeted therapy.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus in older adults: clinical considerations and management

Srikanth Bellary et al.

Summary: The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing among the aging population, presenting challenges in management due to patient heterogeneity, comorbidities, susceptibility to hypoglycemia, increased dependence on care, and frailty. This review focuses on the pathophysiological mechanisms of T2DM in older individuals, new evidence on frailty and sarcopenia, clinical difficulties related to age-associated comorbidities, and implications for guidelines and therapeutic options, highlighting the impact of T2DM on an aging society.
