Drug development, Brazilian biodiversity and political choices: Where are we heading?

Paulo Michel Pinheiro Ferreira et al.

Summary: The aim of this review is to acknowledge the structural advantages of natural products for therapeutic drug design, emphasize the importance of wildlife conservation for scientific and commercial progress in Brazilian regions, and highlight the damaging effects of governmental regulations on biodiversity protection. However, since 2019, all Brazilian biomes and connected ecosystems have been systematically threatened by fire, deforestation, monocultures, cattle raising, mining, and oil spills as a result of financial cuts in key institutions overseeing environmental stability. Nonetheless, natural chemical entities and traditional knowledge play a vital role in converting Brazil into a self-sufficient country for pharmaceutical supplies, cosmetics, and food production.

Pedunculagin isolated from Plinia cauliflora seeds exhibits genotoxic, antigenotoxic and cytotoxic effects in bacteria and human lymphocytes

Amanda Silva Fernandes et al.

Summary: Pedunculagin (PD), an ellagitannin found in various plants, has shown pharmaceutical properties such as antitumor and antioxidant effects. This study investigated the cytotoxic, genotoxic, and antigenotoxic activities of PD using both in silico and in vitro assays. Results revealed that while PD exhibited genotoxic and cytotoxic effects in human lymphocytes, it also showed antimutagenic properties in bacteria.
