Chemopreventive and anti-tumor potential of vitamin E in preclinical breast cancer studies: A systematic review

Maria do Perpetuo Socorro de Sousa Coelho et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the antitumor and chemopreventive activity of different vitamin E isoforms through in vitro and in vivo studies. A total of 12 studies were included, showing that vitamin E isoforms could delay tumor development, reduce tumor size, inhibit cell proliferation, regulate apoptosis-related genes, and enhance immune response. The effects on oxidative stress markers and antioxidant activity varied among studies.

How vitamin E and its derivatives regulate tumour cells via the MAPK signalling pathway?'

Zhen-Qi Yu et al.

Summary: Vitamin E and its derivatives play a critical role in regulating multiple signaling pathways in tumour cells, with specific anti-cancer activities in the MAPK cascade. They can prevent tumorigenesis, inhibit cell growth and metastasis, induce apoptosis, differentiation, and cell cycle arrest through their interactions with ERK, JNK, and p38 MAPK pathways.

Underlying the Mechanisms of Doxorubicin-Induced Acute Cardiotoxicity: Oxidative Stress and Cell Death

Chun-Yan Kong et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms underlying the oxidative stress and cell death pathways induced by doxorubicin, which are the major factors responsible for the acute cardiotoxicity. The authors aim to offer new insights for researchers to discover potential therapeutic strategies to prevent or reverse doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity.

Vitamin E and levocarnitine as prophylaxis against doxorubicin-induced cardio toxicity in the adult cancer patient: A review

Iman Moustafa et al.

Summary: The review found that trials of levocarnitine showed some cardioprotective effects, while the results from trials of vitamin E were controversial and inconclusive. Most of the reviewed trials had shortcomings, indicating the need for further investigations to determine the efficacy of vitamin E and levocarnitine in preventing doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in adult cancer patients.

Summary: This study investigated the antiproliferative and toxicogenetic properties of the ethyl acetate extract from Stevia urticifolia aerial parts. It found that the extract had toxicity to microcrustaceans, antioxidant capacity, and antimitotic, cytotoxic, and clastogenic activities on both plant and mammalian cells. In vivo studies on mice showed no remarkable systemic effects or clinical signs of toxicity, suggesting the potential of Stevia urticifolia for the development of antineoplastic agents.

Modulating effect of DL-kavain on the mutagenicity and carcinogenicity induced by doxorubicin in Drosophila melanogaster

Thais Teixeira da Silva et al.

Summary: The study found that kavain alone did not significantly affect mutagenesis and recombination in fruit flies, but mutagenic activity was observed at concentrations of 64 and 128 mu g/ml in the high metabolic bioactivation cross. When co-treated with DXR, the mutagenic response mediated by DXR was modulated by kavain concentration in both crosses. In the carcinogenesis test, kavain did not show significant carcinogenic or anticarcinogenic activity, but synergistically induced tumors when combined with DXR, enhancing the carcinogenic action of the chemotherapeutic drug.

Melatonin and doxorubicin synergistically enhance apoptosis via autophagy-dependent reduction of AMPKα1 transcription in human breast cancer cells

Quynh Hoa Tran et al.

Summary: The combination of the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin with the natural hormone melatonin can reduce levels of AMP-activated protein kinase alpha 1 (AMPK alpha 1) in breast cancer cells, increasing sensitivity to doxorubicin and leading to cancer cell death. This synergistic effect is seen in various cancer cell lines and with other cancer drugs like cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil, irinotecan, and sorafenib. Reducing AMPK alpha 1 expression may be an effective strategy to enhance the sensitivity of cancer cells to doxorubicin therapy.
