Comparison of the alkali-silica reactions of ferronickel slag aggregate in fly ash geopolymer and cement mortars

Alan Thompson et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the expansion of ferronickel slag (FNS) in fly ash geopolymer mortar and its potential to cause alkali-silica reaction (ASR). The results show that FNS is non-reactive in fly ash geopolymer, making it a more stable alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) for reducing ASR expansion.

Mechanical performance, hydration characteristics and microstructures of high volume blast furnace ferronickel slag cement mortar by wet grinding activation

Yubo Li et al.

Summary: Wet grinding proved to significantly enhance the pozzolanic behavior and filling effect of blast furnace ferronickel slag (BFFS), allowing for its more effective application in cement mortar. The results highlighted that wet-grinding treatment provided an effective way to improve the early and late age strength of high-volume BFFS cement mortar.

The effects of cations and concentration on reaction mechanism of alkali-activated blast furnace ferronickel slag

Zongxian Huang et al.

Summary: The effects of ion species and alkalinity on the alkali activated furnace ferronickel slag were studied. The results showed that NaOH produced higher reaction rate at lower concentration and differences were found between NaOH and KOH at higher concentration. A hypothesis was proposed to explain the anomalous phenomenon at higher concentration.

Analysis of the isothermal hydration heat of cement paste containing mechanically activated fly ash

Y. Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that mechanical activation can enhance the hydration reaction of fly ash with cement. Untreated fly ash can retard the cement hydration process, while mechanically activated fly ash can promote the hydration reaction of cement. This is because mechanical activation increases the filler effect of fly ash and increases its surface area, which is beneficial for the growth of C-S-H. Furthermore, mechanical activation can also improve the pozzolanic reactivity of fly ash and increase the reaction rate of the entire cement system.

Summary: This study found that the average Ea values of CSA cements are high, with slight increases when silica fume replaces cement, and potential decreases or increases when Class C fly ash is used. Ea values calculated using different methods may vary, with those determined using heat of hydration being higher than those obtained using chemical shrinkage when using the exponential method.

Hydration heat and kinetics of composite binder containing blast furnace ferronickel slag at different temperatures

Summary: The influence of BFFS on hydration depends on temperature and BFFS content, with higher temperatures promoting hydration while increasing BFFS content slowing it down and reducing the exothermic rate. The hydration process involves nucleation and crystal growth, followed by interactions and diffusion.
