Metal ion induced changes in the structure of Schiff base hydrazone chelates and their reactivity effect on catalytic benzyl alcohol oxidation and biological assays

Mohamed Shaker S. Adam et al.

Summary: Divalent para-magnetic copper(II) and iron(II) chelates of Schiffbase isatin hydrazone derivative are synthesized and characterized. CuLONOCl and Fe(LONO)(2) exhibit distorted square planar and octahedral structures, respectively. Both chelates show catalytic activity in the oxidation of benzyl alcohol, with CuLONOCl displaying higher yields of benzaldehyde and Fe(LONO)(2) exhibiting less catalytic action. CuLONOCl also demonstrates stronger antimicrobial and anticancer effects compared to Fe(LONO)(2). The interaction of these chelates with ctDNA is studied spectroscopically.

Unveiling the role of Ca ion in the sulfidation of smithsonite: A density functional theory study

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the inhibition effect and mechanism of calcium ion on the sulfidation of smithsonite. The results showed that the reactivity of the smithsonite surface was significantly decreased after the adsorption of calcium ion, and the adsorption energies of HS on the smithsonite surface in the presence of calcium ion were much higher than those in the absence of calcium ion. The analysis of bond population, electron density, and partial density of states revealed that the calcium-sulfur bonds formed after calcium ion adsorption were weaker and less stable compared to the zinc-sulfur bonds formed before calcium ion adsorption. Moreover, the hydration shell on the smithsonite surface became more resistant to penetration by HS after calcium ion adsorption. These factors jointly contributed to the inhibition effect of calcium ion on the adsorption of HS on the smithsonite surface. This study provides important insights into the negative impact of calcium ion on the sulfidation of smithsonite.

???????Atomic-level insights into the modification mechanism of Fe (III) ion on smithsonite (101) surface from DFT calculation

Yuanjia Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, the modification mechanism of Fe(III) ion on the surface of smithsonite was systematically investigated using DFT calculation. The Fe(III) ion was found to mainly exist in the form of [Fe(OH)(2)(H2O)4]+ and [Fe(OH)4]-, with the most favorable adsorption position being the O site bonded to the C atom on the smithsonite surface. The adsorption of Fe(III) ion on smithsonite was primarily attributed to the combined effect of Fe-O bonds and hydrogen bonding.
