Breedbase: a digital ecosystem for modern plant breeding

Nicolas Morales et al.

Summary: Modern breeding methods rely on robust data management systems and analytics tools to integrate next-generation sequencing and phenomics, allowing the selection of plants with the best characteristics and genetic advantage as parents to create improved cultivars for high adoption rates. Breedbase is a web-based breeding database system that enables better management and utilization of breeding data for decision making in various crops and projects.

An interdisciplinary and participatory methodology to improve user acceptability of root, tuber and banana varieties

Lora Forsythe et al.

Summary: Traditionally, breeding programmes have prioritized yield and disease resistance over consumer demand for quality characteristics in root, tuber and banana (RTB) crops. To address this issue, a five-step methodology has been developed to identify demand for quality characteristics among diverse user groups, informing the development of improved selection tools. This initiative presents a new basis to understand consumer preferences for RTB crops and is currently being applied in projects in sub-Saharan Africa and globally.

A review of varietal change in roots, tubers and bananas: consumer preferences and other drivers of adoption and implications for breeding

Graham Thiele et al.

Summary: Insufficient priority given to consumer-preferred traits by breeding programmes contributes to limited uptake of modern varieties, while the impact of gender differences in consumer preferences and the informal seed system on varietal change remains unresolved and inconsistent.
