Regulation of essential oil in aromatic plants under changing environment

Umra Aqeel et al.

Summary: Extreme environmental factors significantly affect the bioactive components and essential oil content in medicinal and aromatic plants. The production of essential oils in plants is influenced by various factors, which in turn affect the oil yield and constituents. Essential oils are accumulated in specialized secretory tissues and are responsible for producing aroma. Understanding the impact of stress on essential oil quantity and quality can have a positive impact on growers and processors. This review article discusses essential oil biosynthesis, the influence of environmental factors, and strategies to enhance essential oil production under unfavorable conditions.

Pharmacology of Natural Volatiles and Essential Oils in Food, Therapy, and Disease Prophylaxis

Nicholas John Sadgrove et al.

Summary: This commentary critically examines the modern paradigm of natural volatiles in 'medical aromatherapy', addressing the semantics of natural volatiles in health, chemophenetic challenges to authenticity or reproducibility, and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes in food, therapy, and disease prophylaxis. The commentary suggests that volatile organic compounds should be examined as candidates for prophylaxis of cardiovascular disease, and that the science of natural volatiles may need to be revisited in the context of health and nutrition.

Encapsulation strategies to enhance the antibacterial properties of essential oils in food system

Yulin Zhu et al.

Summary: The frequent occurrences of foodborne diseases and multidrug-resistant bacteria have led researchers to seek natural antiseptic alternatives like essential oils (EOs) to improve food safety. However, the effectiveness of EOs can be affected by various factors, and their application in the food industry is restricted by certain properties. Utilizing nanoparticles and packaging methods have shown to be effective in enhancing the protective and functional properties of EOs in different food systems.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic and flower volatile diversity in natural populations of Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum in Bulgaria through SSR, SRAP markers, and GC/MS analysis. The results showed low to moderate genetic differentiation among populations and identified distinct chemical profiles within the flower volatiles. A core collection strategy was proposed and compared with the PowerCore software, demonstrating the selection of representatives from different genetic and metabolic clusters. The study highlights the potential for developing core collections representing the genetic and metabolite diversity of natural populations in aromatic and medicinal plants.
