Summary: This review provides an up-to-date overview of stroke and large vessel occlusion (LVO) globally, as well as the eligibility and access to IV thrombolysis (IVT) and mechanical thrombectomy (MT) worldwide. Despite advances in treatment eligibility in the past 5 years, access to acute stroke care and utilization of MT or IVT remains low, highlighting a significant gap among eligible patients. Multiple global initiatives are currently in progress to improve systems of care and bridge this gap.

The state of stroke services across the globe: Report of World Stroke Organization-World Health Organization surveys

High-income countries have a higher proportion of stroke units and acute stroke treatments, while low-income countries lag behind. LMICs also provide less rehabilitation services.
