Deep CNNs as universal predictors of elasticity tensors in homogenization

Bernhard Eidel

Summary: In this work, 3D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are trained to predict the elastic macroscale stiffness of random heterogeneous, multiphase materials. The proposed CNN model is universal and can handle various microstructures, phase fractions, and ranges of material properties. It predicts stiffness under different boundary conditions and provides an indicator for the representative volume element size. The model achieves high accuracy and greatly speeds up the prediction process compared to traditional methods.

Elimination of ringing artifacts by finite-element projection in FFT-based homogenization

Richard J. Leute et al.

Summary: This paper generalizes the compatibility projection method introduced by Vond.rejc et al. (2014) [24] beyond the Fourier basis while maintaining Fourier-acceleration and fast convergence properties. The proposed method eliminates ringing artifacts and provides an efficient computational homogenization scheme that is equivalent to canonical finite-element formulations on fully structured grids.

Application of artificial neural network for determining elastic constants of a transversely isotropic rock from a single-orientation core

Yoonsung Lee et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to determine the five elastic constants of transversely isotropic (TI) rocks. The method involves strip load test experiments, training ANNs with numerous datasets, and applying trained ANNs to determine the elastic constants. Experimental validation shows that the method accurately determines the elastic constants and significantly reduces computing time.

Prediction of rock elastic moduli based on a micromechanical finite element model

Zhuang Sun et al.

Summary: The finite element simulation approach presented in this study focuses on computing rock elastic moduli by addressing the grain-grain contact problem associated with different degrees of consolidation in reservoir rocks. By utilizing a robust grain-grain segmentation method, a conformal meshing algorithm, and considering grain-grain contact physics, accurate results can be obtained. Benchmarking results are compared with literature and laboratory data, showcasing the effectiveness of this approach.
