An update on pityrosporum folliculitis in Singapore from a single tertiary care dermatological centre

Adeline Mei-Yen Yong et al.

Summary: Pityrosporum folliculitis (PF) is a common skin condition that can be easily misdiagnosed, especially by non-dermatologists. A retrospective review of 375 patients with clinical presentations compatible with PF at the National University Hospital in Singapore revealed that 57.1% of them were confirmed as having PF based on Gram-stain microscopy. Most patients were young males aged 21-30 years, with lesions mainly on the trunk and back, and the majority presented with symptoms lasting more than one month. Oral antifungal treatment was the choice for 59.8% of patients.
