Probing the Mysterious Behavior of Tungsten as a Dopant Inside Pristine Cobalt-Free Nickel-Rich Cathode Materials

Nafiseh Zaker et al.

Summary: Nickel-rich cathode materials with small amounts of tungsten (W) dopants have been widely studied, but the structural properties of tungsten in these materials are not well-understood. This study uses a combination of characterization techniques and density functional theory (DFT) to determine the structure and location of W-species in W-doped LiNiO2 particles. The results show that W is mainly distributed on the surfaces and inside grain boundaries of the particles. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping confirms the presence of W, O, and Ni in the grain boundaries, as well as W- and O-rich regions on the surface. The paper suggests the presence of kinetically stabilized-Li4+xNi1-xWO6 (x = 0, 0.1) and LixWyOz phases in the cathode material.

Transition Metal Oxides and Li2CO3 as Precursors for the Synthesis of Ni-Rich Single-Crystalline NCM for Sustainable Lithium-Ion Battery Production

Raffael Ruess et al.

Summary: Single-crystalline Ni-rich LiNi1-x-y CoxMnyO2 (SC-NCM) cathode active materials offer advantages such as low surface area and high morphological stability. This study demonstrates a more energy-efficient and cost-effective synthesis route for SC-NCM that does not require highly engineered precursors like conventional methods. The material synthesized using this method shows equivalent structural and electrochemical properties to materials synthesized from hydroxide-based precursors.
