Ndufa4 Regulates the Proliferation and Apoptosis of Neurons via miR-145a-5p/Homer1/Ccnd2

Fang Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the regulatory role of NDUFA4 in downstream signaling cascades and neuronal proliferation and apoptosis. Ndufa4 overexpression promoted neuronal proliferation and inhibited apoptosis, while Ndufa4 knockdown had the opposite effect. Ndufa4 depletion also altered the microRNA expressional profiles of the cerebellum and led to impaired spatial learning capacity and exploratory activity in mice.

MicroRNA antagonist therapy during normothermic machine perfusion of donor kidneys

Emily R. Thompson et al.

Summary: Normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) is a novel clinical approach used to evaluate and repair organs. This study reports the delivery of oligonucleotide-based therapy to human kidneys during NMP, demonstrating the potential of NMP to bind and block detrimental microRNAs in donor kidneys prior to transplantation.

Effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on functional exercise capacity in patients undergoing cardiac surgery: A randomized clinical trial

Telma Cristina Fontes Cerqueira et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on functional capacity of patients in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery. However, the results showed no significant difference in various outcomes between patients who received the intervention and those in the control group. Therefore, the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation within the first five days after cardiac surgery did not provide any benefits for patients' functional capacity.

OPTN/SRTR 2020 Annual Data Report: Kidney

K. L. Lentine et al.

Summary: The year 2020 presented challenges for kidney transplantation, with a slight decrease in the total number of transplants and a significant decline in living donor transplants due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Racial disparities in living donor transplant access persist. Pediatric kidney transplants were also impacted, with a decrease in the total number of transplants and a continued decrease in deceased donor transplants among pediatric candidates.

Global Estimates of Capacity for Kidney Transplantation in World Countries and Regions

Dominic Mudiayi et al.

Summary: This study explores the availability, accessibility, and quality of kidney transplantation (KT) across countries and regions. The results demonstrate significant disparities in KT incidence, prevalence, availability, accessibility, and quality worldwide, with lower rates observed in low- and lower-middle income countries. Understanding these differences will inform efforts to improve awareness and ensure the provision of high-quality KT care globally.

MicroRNAs in kidney injury and disease

Nassim Mahtal et al.

Summary: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in the development of kidney diseases, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and allograft injury. Dysregulation of miRNAs is involved in the pathophysiology of these conditions. miRNAs can serve as biomarkers for graft function and kidney disease development, and targeting specific miRNAs may be a promising therapeutic strategy.

MicroRNAs: small molecules, big effects

Claire Tinel et al.

Summary: miRNAs have been extensively studied in kidney transplantation, showing potential as biomarkers with an increasing number of case-control studies. Recent literature focuses on using miRNA-targeted genes to study disease pathways, indicating their key regulatory roles in allograft injuries. Future directions should explore integrating miRNAs with other molecular data to better understand cellular interactions in allograft rejection and explore miRNA-based therapy in transplant medicine.

Characterization of a Murine Model System to Study MicroRNA-147 During Inflammatory Organ Injury

Boyun Kim et al.

Summary: This study characterized the expression of miR-147, generated a transgenic mouse line with whole-body deletion of miR-147, and successfully demonstrated deletion of the target gene in different organs. The results showed that miR-147 (-/-) mice exhibited normal growth, development, and offspring, with similar baseline inflammatory gene expression compared to control mice except for elevated IL-6 expression in the spleen.

Kidney physiology and susceptibility to acute kidney injury: implications for renoprotection

Holger Scholz et al.

Summary: The authors discuss the specific kidney regions that are at particular risk of injury, and how this information can help in finding new ways to mitigate injury and avoid permanent damage. They suggest that the physiological heterogeneity of the kidney should be considered when exploring novel renoprotective strategies, such as improving kidney tissue oxygenation and modulating cellular energy metabolism.

Chronic Allograft Injury

Eric Langewisch et al.

Summary: With the improved long-term kidney transplant survival, attention has shifted to understanding the causes of transplanted allograft failure. Chronic allograft injury involves both immune-mediated and nonimmune-mediated injuries, presenting an opportunity to identify those at greater risk and implement new strategies. The research highlights the need to identify markers of injury and mechanisms of injury in order to better understand late graft failure.

Aberrant activation of the complement system in renal grafts is mediated by cold storage

Sorena Lo et al.

Summary: This study revealed that cold storage leads to aberrant activation of complement components in renal grafts following transplantation, with increased levels of C3 and C5b-9. Additionally, cold storage induced local C3 biogenesis in renal proximal cells/tubules, and TNF-alpha was found to promote C3 biogenesis and activation in renal proximal tubular cells.
