Improved First-Principles Model of Differential Mobility Using Higher Order Two-Temperature Theory

Alexander Haack et al.

Summary: Differential mobility spectrometry is a versatile separation technique for various analytes. Theoretical advancements in describing differential ion mobility in different environments have been made, and higher order corrections to two-temperature theory (2TT) have been found to reduce errors compared to first order. Accurate thermochemical corrections may be required for predicting ion mobility behavior in strongly clustering environments. The results provide insight into the ion-solvent clustering process underlying the phenomenon of differential ion mobility.

Influence of Sample Gas Humidity on Product Ion Formation in High Kinetic Energy Ion Mobility Spectrometry (HiKE-IMS)

Christoph Schaefer et al.

Summary: High Kinetic Energy Ion Mobility Spectrometers (HiKE-IMS) chemically ionize gaseous samples and separate ions under high reduced electric field strengths. Increasing sample gas humidity shifts the mechanism of product ion formation from charge transfer to proton transfer. For HiKE-IMS, increasing sample gas humidity benefits the ionization yield of most analytes.

Kinetics in DMS: Modeling Clustering and Declustering Reactions

Alexander Haack et al.

Summary: Differential mobility spectrometry (DMS) utilizes high-frequency oscillating electrical fields to separate complex sample mixtures. This study investigates the behavior of different reactions in DMS at different field strengths. It is found that cluster association and dissociation reactions are generally fast, but low solvent concentration, small dipole moments, and strong ion-solvent binding can cause a lag in the ion's DMS response.

High kinetic energy-ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry investigations of several volatiles and their fully deuterated analogues

Florentin Weiss et al.

Summary: This study reports the first High Kinetic Energy-Ion Mobility Spectrometry-Mass Spectrometry (HiKE-IMS-MS) studies involving six volatiles and their fully deuterated analogues. The goal is to understand the ion-molecule chemistry occurring in the HiKE-IMS. The reactions of different reagent ions with the volatiles and the influence of sample air humidity and reduced electric field on the reactions are discussed.
