Ultra-low current electrospray ionization of chloroform solution for the analysis of perfluorinated sulfonic acids

Taoqing Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the femtoamp and picoamp electrospray ionization (ESI) characteristics of a nonpolar solvent. The direct ESI mass spectrometry analysis of chloroform extract solution allowed for rapid analysis of perfluorinated sulfonic acid analytes in drinking water. By coupling with a liquid-liquid extraction workflow, the method achieved a low limit of detection (LoD) and a wide quantitation range for perfluorinated sulfonic compounds in water samples.

Conducting and characterizing femto flow electrospray ionization

Huishan Li et al.

Summary: Femto flow electrospray ionization (ESI) with flow rates ranging from 240 fL min(-1) to the low pico level (<10 pL min(-1)) was conducted and the signature analyte ion current intensities and profiles were observed. The obtained flow rate and ionization current enabled size calculation for initial charged nanodroplets.

Comparative study of H3O+ (aq) and NH4+ (aq) on electrophoresis, protonating ability, and sodiation of proteins

Kenzo Hiraoka et al.

Summary: Positive-mode nano-electrospray ionization was used to analyze a mixture solution containing gramicidin S, ubiquitin, and cytochrome c under different pH conditions and with various additives. The study found that different additives and pH conditions resulted in variations in ion signal intensity and protein structure during the ionization process.

Using covalent modifications to distinguish protein electrospray mechanisms: Charged residue model (CRM) vs. chain ejection model (CEM)

Douglas J. D. Pimlott et al.

Summary: Two models, CRM and CEM, have been proposed for the formation of gaseous protein ions under native and denaturing conditions, respectively. By studying acetylation-blocked lysines in proteins, differences between CRM and CEM were revealed. Under native conditions, protein charge states are governed by size, while under denaturing conditions, protein surface chemistry impacts charge states.

Femtoamp and picoamp modes of electrospray and paper spray ionization

Nicholas R. Allen et al.

Summary: Sub nanoampere ionization was achieved using glass emitters and paper spray substrates, generating femto amp ionization currents for direct analysis of samples. This ultra-low current ionization method allows for analysis without sample preparation and potential carryover contamination.

Nested-channel for on-demand alternation between electrospray ionization regimes

Mengtian Li et al.

Summary: By using filamented capillary and gas phase charge supply, on-demand electrospray ionization from different liquid channels in the same emitter was achieved. The sub-channel regime generated smaller charged droplets, improving ionization efficiencies for saccharides, glycopeptide, and proteins while reducing non-specific salt adducts. The nested channels also allowed efficient washing of emitter tip for multiple sampling and analysis operations.
