Separation of Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Porous Materials

Karam B. Idrees et al.

Summary: Industrial-scale thermal separation processes contribute to the increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Porous materials, like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can potentially reduce these emissions by achieving nonthermal chemical separations through the physical adsorption of target species. This study focuses on the synthesis of channel-based MOFs NU-2000 and NU-2001, which can separate industrially relevant xylene isomers under ambient conditions due to sub-angstrom size differences. By increasing the linker dimensionality from 2D to 3D, precise control of MOF pore size and aperture can be achieved, independent of linker orientation.

Tunable Confined Aliphatic Pore Environment in Robust Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Separation of Gases with a Similar Structure

Jingyi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a strategy to refine the pore structure of metal-organic frameworks by tuning the size and number of polycycloalkane-dicarboxylate ligands, leading to improved separation efficiency for structurally similar molecules. The resulting materials exhibit excellent performance in the separation of alkane mixtures and Xe/Kr mixtures.

Separation and Purification of Hydrocarbons with Porous Materials

Yaqi Wu et al.

Summary: This Minireview focuses on the developments of the adsorptive separation of methane/nitrogen, ethene/ethane, propene/propane mixtures as well as on the separation of C-8 aromatics with various materials. The advantages and disadvantages of each material category are discussed, and guidelines for the design of improved materials are proposed. Furthermore, challenges and future developments of each material type and separation processes are discussed.

Reversing Benzene/Cyclohexane Selectivity through Varying Supramolecular Interactions Using Aliphatic, Isoreticular MOFs

Lauren K. Macreadie et al.

Summary: Effective solid-state adsorbent materials, like metal organic frameworks (MOFs), rely on tailored void spaces for selective adsorption. The study explores the selectivity path between planar and 3D-linkers in MOFs and their preference for adsorbing either cyclohexane or benzene. MOF-5 shows a surprising preference for cyclohexane, while CUB-5 and 3DL-MOF-1 are selective for benzene.
