From Divalent to Pentavalent Iron Imido Complexes and an Fe(V) Nitride via N-C Bond Cleavage

Martin Keilwerth et al.

Summary: Terminal imido complexes of iron have been widely studied in metal-catalyzed nitrogen-transfer chemistry. In this study, a new tris-NHC chelating ligand (TIMMNMes) was used to synthesize and compare two series of iron alkyl imido complexes, including a reactive Fe(V) adamantyl imido intermediate. The stability and reactivity of these complexes were investigated using various characterization techniques and quantum chemical calculations.

Reversible C-C Bond Cleavage of a Cobalt Diketimide into an Elusive Cobalt Aryl Nitrenoid Complex

Yunjung Baek et al.

Summary: The reactivity of (L-Tr)Co towards various aryl azides was investigated to understand the electronic structure and reactivity of dipyrrinato cobalt aryl nitrenoid complexes. The synthesis of a Co-II diketimide complex and its reversible C-C bond cleavage to yield a monomeric Co nitrenoid complex was demonstrated. The study revealed the pre-equilibrium between [(L-Tr)Co(NC6F5)](2) and (L-Tr)Co(NC6F5), as well as the reductive coupling, fluoride expulsion, and N-group transfer reactivity of (L-Tr)Co(NC6F5).

Palladium Terminal Imido Complexes with Nitrene Character

Annette Gruenwald et al.

Summary: This study reports three palladium terminal imido complexes with singlet ground states. UV-vis-NIR electronic spectroscopy, high-level computations, and reactivity studies suggest significant palladium(0) singlet-nitrene character. Although the aliphatic nitrene complexes cannot be isolated in pure form, the aryl congener can be characterized by various techniques. The ambiphilic nature of these complexes allows them to catalyze various reactions at or below room temperature.

Mechanistic Investigations into Amination of Unactivated Arenes via Cation Radical Accelerated Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution

Vincent A. Pistritto et al.

Summary: This study provides mechanistic insights into the amination of electron-neutral and electron-rich arenes using organic photoredox catalysis. The findings support a ratelimiting nucleophilic addition mechanism into an arene cation radical using both azole and primary amine nucleophiles. The role of solvents in enabling selective arene oxidation in the presence of amines is confirmed by electrochemistry and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy.

Ligand Tailoring Toward an Air-Stable Iron(V) Nitrido Complex

Martin Keilwerth et al.

Summary: A new supporting ligand TIMMNMes was developed to isolate an air-stable iron(V) complex with a terminal nitrido ligand, synthesized by one-electron oxidation from an iron(IV) precursor. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses showed metal-centered oxidation elongating the iron nitride bond, bringing the high-valence iron center closer to a trigonal bipyramid. Fe-57 Mossbauer, EPR, UV/vis electronic absorption spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations identified the factors affecting the structure and electronic nature of the complex.

Weiqing Mao et al.

Summary: The synthesis of high-valent cobalt(IV) imido complex [(TIMMNmes)Co-IV(NAd)](OTf)(2) (4) via reaction with 1-adamantylazide is discussed. Despite a short half-life at room temperature, compound 4 can be isolated at low temperatures in pure form. Experimental and computational analysis confirm the molecular and electronic structure of 4, suggesting high covalency and substantial triplet nitrene character.

High-Spin Imido Cobalt Complexes with Imidyl Radical Character**

Alexander Reckziegel et al.

Summary: In this study, a variety of trigonal imido cobalt complexes were synthesized with very long Co-N-Aryl bonds. Their electronic structure was investigated using physical and spectroscopic methods, leading to the description of highly unusual imidyl cobalt complexes. Computational analyses supported these findings and revealed the role of the high-spin state in the imidyl character.

Synthesis, structure, and C-H bond activation reaction of an iron(IV) terminal imido complex bearing trifluoromethyl groups

Qing Liu et al.

Summary: An isolable iron(IV) imido complex with trifluoromethyl on nitrogen, [(IPr)Fe(NC(CF3)(2)Ph)(2)], was reported, demonstrating long Fe-N(imido) bonds, bent Fe-N(imido)-C(imido) alignments, and the ability to undergo intramolecular C-H bond activation reaction to transform into an iron(II) amido complex. Theoretical study suggests a hydrogen-atom-abstraction mechanism in the C-H bond activation reaction with low activation barrier due to the electron-withdrawing nature of the trifluoromethyl group.
