Unraveling Radical and Oxygenate Routes in the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane over Boron Nitride

Zihao Zhang et al.

Summary: Through operando synchrotron photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy, we successfully detected short-lived free radicals and oxygenates produced by boron nitride (BN) catalyst in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) reaction. We identified a gas-phase reaction route where partially oxidized enols enter the gas phase, undergo dehydrogenation (and methylation) to form ketenes, and finally produce olefins by decarbonylation. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the >BO dangling site on the catalyst is the source of the free radicals. Additionally, the easy desorption of oxygenates from the catalyst surface is crucial to prevent deep oxidation to CO2.

Oxygen-Functionalized Boron Nitride for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane - The Case for Supported Liquid Phase Catalysis

Patrick Schmatz-Engert et al.

Summary: Boron and boron-containing materials serve as a new class of catalysts for the selective conversion of light alkanes to olefins, with boron oxide playing a key role in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane. Different oxygen activation strategies can control the amount of introduced boron oxide species, impacting the catalyst's activity and selectivity. Molten boron oxide acts as the primary catalyst under reaction conditions, while boron nitride functions as a catalyst support.

Qingying Liu et al.

Summary: Mesoporous B-MCM-41 catalysts with varying boron content (B/Si = 0.015-0.147) were prepared using a simple hydrothermal synthesis method. The catalyst with B/Si = 0.048 exhibited favorable activity, stability, and water tolerance in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane reaction. The active sites for ODHP were identified as the tri-coordinated B-OH species incorporated into the mesoporous silica framework.

Borosilicate zeolite enriched in defect boron sites boosting the low-temperature oxidative dehydrogenation of propane

Bin Qiu et al.

Summary: In this study, an incompletely crystallized borosilicate zeolite catalyst exhibited extraordinary performance in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane. The boron species were found to be anchored to the zeolite matrix in the form of open coordination and formed hydrogen bonds with defective boron species, preventing excessive leaching of boron. The active center for catalyzing the reaction was identified as the B-OH groups in aggregated BOx species that formed hydrogen bonds with adjacent Si-OH groups.

It's a Gas: Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane over Boron Nitride Catalysts

Peter Kraus et al.

Summary: The study suggests that boron nitride catalysts exhibit high selectivity in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane, which can be modeled reasonably well by a gas-phase conversion mechanism. Water cofeed leads to increased conversion of propane, while dilution of the catalytic bed and variations in the C3H8/O-2 ratio also affect the selectivities of minor species in gas-phase reactions.
