Aliphatic and Aromatic C-H Bond Oxidation by High-Valent Manganese(IV)-Hydroxo Species

Yujeong Lee et al.

Summary: A high-valent manganese(IV)-hydroxo complex was synthesized and characterized in this study. It was found that this complex can activate C-H bonds of aliphatic and aromatic compounds under mild conditions. Detailed kinetic studies revealed that the activation of C-H bonds occurs via rate-determining hydrogen atom abstraction and electron-transfer pathway.

Heme compound II models in chemoselectivity and disproportionation reactions

Ranjana Gupta et al.

Summary: In this study, heme compound II models with electron-deficient and -rich porphyrins were synthesized and investigated for their activity in chemoselectivity and disproportionation reactions using cyclohexene as a probe. The results showed that different compound II models exhibited different chemoselectivity towards the oxidation of cyclohexene, which may be attributed to the disproportionation process and the formation of active oxidants.

De Novo Design, Solution Characterization, and Crystallographic Structure of an Abiological Mn-Porphyrin-Binding Protein Capable of Stabilizing a Mn(V) Species

Samuel Mann et al.

Summary: De novo protein design provides a chance to test our understanding of how metalloproteins perform difficult transformations, while high-resolution structural information is critical to comprehend their functions. Successes have been achieved in designing porphyrin-binding proteins, but obtaining crystallographic characterization remains a challenge, limiting the knowledge gained from such studies and potential new functions. The formation of highly oxidizing high-valent intermediates presents design challenges that have not been tackled before, emphasizing the need for purposeful design and limitation of deleterious oxidation.

Deeper Understanding of Mononuclear Manganese(IV)-Oxo Binding Bronsted and Lewis Acids and the Manganese(IV)-Hydroxide Complex

Deepika G. Karmalkar et al.

Summary: Binding of Lewis acidic metal ions and Bronsted acid at the metal-oxo group enhances reactivity of high-valent metal-oxo complexes in oxidation reactions. The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity studies of a mononuclear manganese(IV)-oxo complex binding triflic acid were reported in this study. Results show an interesting correlation between the Mn-O stretching frequencies and the reactivities in hydrogen atom transfer and oxygen atom transfer reactions.

Mian Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, six manganese(IV)-oxo complexes bearing electron-rich and -deficient porphyrins were synthesized and investigated in various oxidation reactions. The research found a reversed reactivity between the electron-rich and -deficient Mn(IV)-oxo porphyrins in hydrogen atom transfer and oxygen atom transfer reactions at different temperatures.

Deuterium kinetic isotope effects as redox mechanistic criterions

Shunichi Fukuzumi et al.

Summary: This article focuses on deuterium kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) as criteria for elucidating redox mechanisms, including proton transfer, hydrogen transfer, and hydride transfer reactions. Different reaction pathways and mechanisms are discussed based on the redox properties of donors and acceptors, exhibiting unique KIEs. Temperature dependency of KIEs in aldehyde deformylation reactions distinguishes between two reaction pathways, shedding light on the mechanisms involved.

Zhifeng Ma et al.

Summary: Density functional theory calculations were used to investigate norcarane hydroxylation by neutral and cationic oxoMn(V) porphyrin complexes, revealing that the cationic complexes have lower energy barriers due to stabilization of the acceptor orbital, enhancing the reaction compared to neutral complexes.
