An electric molecular motor

Long Zhang et al.

Summary: This article describes an electric molecular motor based on a [3]catenane, which uses electricity to drive two rings to rotate unidirectionally in solution. The demonstration of continual circumrotatory motion of the rings represents an important step towards surface-bound electric molecular motors, and has the advantage of no waste production.

Pre-arranged building block approach for the orthogonal synthesis of an unfolded tetrameric organic-inorganic phosphazane macrocycle

Ying Sim et al.

Summary: A two-step synthetic route using pre-arranged building blocks was successfully utilized to design and synthesize a large unfolded tetrameric macrocycle in this study. The obtained macrocycle has an unfolded open-face cavity area of 110.1 angstroms.

Anion Responsive Molecular Switch Based on a Doubly Strapped Calix[4]pyrrole

Kaisa Helttunen

Summary: A calix[4]pyrrole receptor with two proximally meso-meso linking isophthaloyl straps displays open and closed states depending on the calix[4]pyrrole conformation. Anion binding triggers a closed state of the receptor providing two types of interactions with an aromatic benzoate guest. NMR experiments show slow exchange dynamics of benzoate, acetate, and chloride anions in the receptor.

Size-control in the synthesis of oxo-bridged phosphazane macrocycles via a modular addition approach

Xiaoyan Shi et al.

Summary: The study presents a synthetic route to high-order oxygen-bridged phosphazane macrocycles via a 3 + n cyclisation strategy, resulting in isolation of an all-P-III high-order hexameric cyclodiphosphazane macrocycle with a larger cavity than comparable organic crown-ethers. This approach demonstrates that increasing building block complexity allows precise control over macrocycle size, which will advance developments in both phosphazane and main group chemistry, as well as in the field of supramolecular chemistry.

Mechanosynthesis of Higher-Order Cocrystals: Tuning Order, Functionality and Size in Cocrystal Design**

Zi Xuan Ng et al.

Summary: This study presents a new set of higher-order cocrystals (HOCs) based on the phosph(V/V)azane heterosynthon building block, characterized by synergistic and orthogonal intermolecular interactions and can be easily obtained through sequential or one-pot mechanochemical methods. Computational modeling methods suggest that HOCs are thermodynamically driven to form and their mechanical properties depend strongly on the composition and intermolecular forces within the crystal, offering untapped potential for material property optimization.

ON/OFF metal-triggered molecular tweezers for fullerene recognition

Adriana Sacristan-Martin et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular tweezers for fullerene recognition were developed based on 2,2 '-bipyridine-bearing corannulene motifs, allowing for selective syn or anti confirmation through Cu(i) coordination/decoordination. This control mechanism enables effective metal-triggered ON/OFF molecular tweezers for fullerene recognition.
