Solid Additive-Assisted Layer-by-Layer Processing for 19% Efficiency Binary Organic Solar Cells

Guanyu Ding et al.

Summary: This study developed a solid additive-assisted layer-by-layer (SAA-LBL) processing to fabricate high-efficiency organic solar cells (OSCs). By adding fatty acid (FA) as a solid additive to the polymer donor PM6 solution, controllable pre-phase separation forms between PM6 and FA, resulting in a desired morphology with refined phase-separated domain and vertical phase-separation structure for better performance. The binary OSCs based on PM6:Y6 blend achieved a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.16% with SAA-LBL processing, and this methodology can be applied to other systems as well.

Understanding, quantifying, and controlling the molecular ordering of semiconducting polymers: from novices to experts and amorphous to perfect crystals

Zhengxing Peng et al.

Summary: The molecular ordering in semiconducting polymers plays a critical role in device performance. The article emphasizes the importance of quantifying molecular ordering and introduces consistent terminology for describing crystallinity, semi-crystallinity, and paracrystallinity. By combining X-ray scattering and calorimetry, a deeper understanding of molecular ordering can be achieved, leading to the classification of polymers based on quantitative analysis of disorder parameters and thermal transitions. Challenges in designing perfect polymer crystals are outlined, along with a proposed molecular grafting approach akin to epitaxy in classic semiconductor thin film growth.

Ternary-Assisted Sequential Solution Deposition Enables Efficient All-Polymer Solar Cells with Tailored Vertical-Phase Distribution

Feng-Zhe Cui et al.

Summary: This study adopts a ternary-assisted sequential solution deposition strategy to regulate the vertical compositional profile of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs). A favorable acceptor(donor)-enriched phase near the cathode(anode) can be obtained by this strategy, resulting in enhanced exciton yield and carrier density. Non-geminate recombination is suppressed by improving the exciton diffusion length. This study demonstrates the success of the ternary-assisted strategy in reorganizing the vertical-phase distribution, providing a feasible route for efficient all-polymer photovoltaics.
