PtFeCoNiCu high-entropy solid solution alloy as highly efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction

Tao Chen et al.

Summary: PtFeCoNiCu high-entropy alloy nanoparticles are reported as a promising electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). It exhibits remarkable ORR catalytic activity, 15.8 times higher than a commercial Pt/C catalyst, and excellent stability with minimal voltage decay after durability testing. The high activity is attributed to the ligand effect, optimization of surface electronic structure, and formation of multiple active sites. This catalyst design direction shows promising potential for highly efficient ORR in proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Epitaxial Growth of Ultrathin Highly Crystalline Pt-Ni Nanostructure on a Metal Carbide Template for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Hui Ding et al.

Summary: The epitaxial growth of highly crystalline Pt3Ni overlayer on earth-abundant nickel carbide is reported, forming Ni3C@Pt3Ni core-shell nanoparticles with a well-defined interface through a new lattice-match-directed synthetic strategy. Derived from such core-shell nanostructures, ultrathin highly crystalline Pt3Ni nanocages have an advantageous configuration of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)-favored facets and inherently high active surface area for the ORR, bringing high mass activity and specific activity.

Coplanar Pt/C Nanomeshes with Ultrastable Oxygen Reduction Performance in Fuel Cells

Yanmin Hu et al.

Summary: Efficient and highly stable catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction are essential for long-term operation of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The coplanar Pt-carbon nanomeshes synthesized in this study exhibit excellent activity and stability in fuel cell tests, with peak power density of 1.21 W cm(-2) and current density of 0.360 A cm(-2) at 0.80 V in the H-2/O-2 cell. Density-functional theory analysis suggests that the increased vacancy formation energy of Pt atoms in coplanar Pt/C NMs helps restrain Pt dissolution and aggregation.
