Chemically Induced Mismatch of Rings and Stations in [3]Rotaxanes

Massimiliano Curcio et al.

Summary: Innovative properties and processes can be achieved by mechanically interlocking molecular components, which are potentially valuable for applications in nanoscience, sensing, catalysis, and materials science. This study demonstrates a unique [3]rotaxane structure with adjustable recognition sites on the axle component controlled by acid-base inputs, leading to different properties and a fine tuning of pK(a) values.

Phosphorus-Containing Superbases: Recent Progress in the Chemistry of Electron-Abundant Phosphines and Phosphazenes

Robin F. Weitkamp et al.

Summary: The renaissance of Bronsted superbases is based on their ability to undergo various chemical transformations under mild conditions. Four major factors can be adjusted to tune their basicity selectively, including the nature of the basic center, electron donation by substituents, charge delocalization, and energy gain by hydrogen bonding. The appearance of neutral electron-rich phosphine and phosphazene bases in literature over the past decades has made them indispensable as auxiliary bases in deprotonation processes. Their applications in catalysis and coordination chemistry have also gained widespread interest.

Chemically Fueled Three-State Chiroptical Switching Supramolecular Gel with Temporal Control

Enzo Olivieri et al.

Summary: The study introduces a fueling method using trichloroacetic acid to create dissipative gelating materials that can switch between different acid/base states. The system is robust and resilient, with the chiral nature of amino acid gelator contributing to chiroptical switching properties.

A catalysis-driven artificial molecular pump

Shuntaro Amano et al.

Summary: This study introduces an autonomous chemically fueled information ratchet that continuously pumps crown ether macrocycles from bulk solution onto a molecular axle without the need for further intervention. By tuning the dynamics of the processes, the molecular machine is able to move macrocycles from their lowest energy state in the solution to a higher energy state on the axle, maintaining out-of-equilibrium [n]rotaxanes as long as unreacted fuel is present.
