Effect of aggregate size and film quality on the electrochemical properties of non-noble metal catalysts in rotating ring disk electrode measurements

Secil Unsal et al.

Summary: Non-noble metal catalysts (NNMCs) have the potential to replace expensive Pt-based catalysts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). This study investigated the effect of film thickness and quality on the electrochemical behavior of three NNMCs with different aggregate sizes. The results showed that a smaller particle size enhanced the ORR limiting current and improving thin film quality led to a 2-fold increase in H2O2-yield.

Summary: Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have seen significant development in various applications, particularly in electrocatalysis under harsh conditions. This study employs Density Functional Theory to analyze the thermodynamics of SACs with different metal atoms embedded in graphene, examining their activity, selectivity, and stability. The research also investigates the effects of adsorbed species on the active sites and the impact of the metal center state on the reactivity of the carbon lattice.

Standardized protocols for evaluating platinum group metal-free oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts in polymer electrolyte fuel cells

Hanguang Zhang et al.

Summary: PGM-free electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction at the fuel cell cathode have shown improved activity, but their stability and durability are still insufficient. This study proposes and validates a test protocol that is relevant to the operating conditions, can be completed within a reasonable time, and widely adopted, to assess the performance and durability of PGM-free catalysts.

Capabilities and limitations of rotating disk electrodes versus membrane electrode assemblies in the investigation of electrocatalysts

Timon Lazaridis et al.

Summary: Cost-competitive fuel cells and water electrolysers require efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen reactions. Rotating disk electrodes (RDEs) and membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) are common tools for assessing electrocatalyst activity and durability. However, RDE technique cannot answer certain scientific questions. Therefore, we advocate for the greater adoption of MEA testing in the early stages of electrocatalyst development.

Spin State as a Participator for Demetalation Durability and Activity of Fe-N-C Electrocatalysts

Fang Sun et al.

Summary: This study systematically examined the effect of spin state on the demetalation durability and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of Fe-N-C electrocatalysts. The results showed that low-spin and medium-spin FeN4 clusters exhibited excellent acid durability and high ORR activity, while high-spin FeN4 clusters had impressive ORR activity but poor stability in acids. Furthermore, the applied potential was found to induce a spin crossover in the active center. These findings advance our understanding of the structure-activity correlation of FeN4 and contribute to the rational design of highly active and stable Fe-N-C electrocatalysts.

Identification of durable and non-durable FeNx sites in Fe-N-C materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Jingkun Li et al.

Summary: Fe-N-C materials show promise as an alternative to platinum in acidic polymer fuel cells, but limited understanding of their operando degradation hinders rational approaches to improved durability. Two distinct FeNx sites in the catalysts degrade differently during the oxygen reduction reaction, with one site substantially contributing after 50 hours of operation.

Effect of Cobalt Speciation and the Graphitization of the Carbon Matrix on the CO2 Electroreduction Activity of Co/N-Doped Carbon Materials

Kazuyuki Iwase et al.

Summary: The cobalt-nitrogen co-doped carbon materials with atomically dispersed Co-N sites have shown superior activities and selectivities for the electroreduction of carbon dioxide to CO. The catalyst synthesis conditions and materials' composition have not been rigorously studied, but it was found that hosting atomic Co-N centers in carbon layers covering Co nanoparticles improves CO-selectivity.

Active Site Identification in FeNC Catalysts and Their Assignment to the Oxygen Reduction Reaction Pathway by In Situ Fe-57 Mossbauer Spectroscopy

Lingmei Ni et al.

Summary: This study identified the active site species in different FeNC catalysts prepared through various routes, revealing common spectral changes during the direct electroreduction of oxygen. However, changes in selectivity were attributed to variations within additional species. Density functional theory calculations provided insights into the nature of nitrogen coordination in FeN4 moieties involved in the oxygen reduction reaction.
