Properties and applications of photoexcited chromophore-radical systems

Theresia Quintes et al.

Summary: Photoexcited organic chromophore-radical systems have the potential for various applications in molecular spintronics, such as quantum information technology and artificial photosynthesis. However, controlling the magnetic properties of these materials is crucial for their further development, requiring a deep understanding of excited-state dynamics. This Review discusses photogenerated triplet-doublet systems and their potential for molecular spintronics, including theoretical description of the spin system, excited-state mechanisms, and characterization techniques. Covalently linked triplet-radical systems are also reviewed, emphasizing the need for further systematic investigations into magnetic interactions.

Optical Spin Polarization of a Narrow-Linewidth Electron-Spin Qubit in a Chromophore/Stable-Radical System

Yunfan Qiu et al.

Summary: Photoexcited organic chromophores combined with stable radicals can be used as candidates for quantum information applications. In this study, the synthesis and characterization of 1,6,7,12-Tetra-(4-tert-butylphenoxy)-perylene-3,4 : 9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (tpPDI) linked to a partially deuterated alpha,gamma-bisdiphenylene-beta-phenylallyl radical (BDPA-d(16)) were performed using time-resolved optical and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. The results showed efficient generation of a quartet state (Q) followed by a spin-polarized doublet ground state (D-0) upon photoexcitation of tpPDI-BDPA-d(16).

Accessing the triplet state of perylenediimide by radical-enhanced intersystem crossing

Maximilian Maylaender et al.

Summary: In this study, radical-enhanced intersystem crossing (EISC) was used to successfully generate the PDI triplet state, and strong magnetic exchange coupling between the PDI triplet state and TEMPO was demonstrated through femtosecond UV-vis transient absorption and transient electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. Significant differences were observed in the deactivation rate constants of the S-1 state and triplet yields for compounds bearing PDI moieties with different core substitution patterns.

Exploring Photogenerated Molecular Quartet States as Spin Qubits and Qudits

Maximilian Maylander et al.

Summary: The study investigates the potential of photogenerated molecular spin systems in quantum information science, demonstrating the formation of a quartet state with long spin polarization lifetimes and coherence times, as well as over 60 single-qubit logic operations that can be performed at 80 K. The large magnitude of the nitroxide N-14 hyperfine coupling and the further splitting of electron spin sublevels are also discussed in the context of the system's viability as a qubit for quantum information science applications containing 12 electron-nuclear spin states.

Dynamical decoupling in water-glycerol glasses: a comparison of nitroxides, trityl radicals and gadolinium complexes

Janne Soetbeer et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the analogous DD behavior of water-soluble nitroxides in water-glycerol glass, showing that Carr-Purcell and Uhrig DD schemes are superior in resolving and identifying active dephasing mechanisms. This research also reveals partial coherence loss to intramolecular nitroxide and trityl nuclei, while zero field splitting-induced losses for gadolinium labels cannot be refocused.
