Large Cages of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks

Haoze Wang et al.

Summary: The design and synthesis of permanently porous materials with extended cage structures is a challenging task in chemistry. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), which are framework materials built from interconnected tetrahedral nodes through imidazolate linkers, play a unique role in meeting this challenge. The structures of ZIFs consist of large zeolite-like cages that are covalently connected with neighboring cages and fused in three-dimensional space. These fused cages provide exceptional architectural and chemical stability, allowing the passage of gases and molecules through the cages and facilitating chemical reactions within the cages. The combination of cage chemistry and extended structures in ZIFs results in interconnected yet compartmentalized void spaces, making them highly useful for catalysis, gas storage, and gas separation applications.

Protein stabilization and refolding in a gigantic self-assembled cage

Daishi Fujita et al.

Summary: Encapsulation of a protein in a molecular cage with an open framework stabilizes its tertiary structure and enhances its enzymatic activity, particularly in organic solvents. The key to this stability lies in the isolated space, reminiscent of chaperonins. This new protein-based nanobiotechnology accelerates molecular biology research and industrial applications.
