2D II-VI Semiconductor Nanoplatelets: From Material Synthesis to Optoelectronic Integration

Benjamin T. Diroll et al.

Summary: The field of colloidal synthesis of semiconductors has matured over the past 40 years, especially in the production of II-VI semiconductor nanocrystals with tailored shapes and compositions. II-VI semiconductor nanoplatelets have become narrow room-temperature emitters with good stability over time. They exhibit interesting features at the intersection of colloidal quantum dots and epitaxial quantum wells. This review discusses the synthetic developments, spectroscopic properties, and applications of such nanoplatelets.

CdS/CdSe/CdS Spherical Quantum Wells with Near-Unity Biexciton Quantum Yield for Light- Emitting-Device Applications

Andrew A. Marder et al.

Summary: Compared to zero-dimensional (0D) semiconductor quantum dots, 2D semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) offer a spectrally narrow luminescence and superior absorption coefficients. However, optical devices based on NPLs still suffer from nonradiative Auger decay, which limits the efficiency of various processes. In this study, it is demonstrated that Auger recombination is strongly suppressed in spherically shaped nanoplatelets called quantum shells (QSs), leading to improved performance in terms of biexciton emission yield, amplified spontaneous emission, and electroluminescence enhancement. These results are significant for the development of solution-processed colloidal lasers and LEDs.

Quantum Shells Boost the Optical Gain of Lasing Media

James Cassidy et al.

Summary: The study shows that semiconductor quantum shells with an inverted geometry can inhibit Auger recombination in quantum dots and improve their multiexciton characteristics. By promoting spatial separation between multiple excitons and inducing exciton-exciton repulsion, quantum shells can achieve ultralong lifetimes and high quantum yields, making them attractive for optically and electrically pumped gain media.

Shape Control of Colloidal Semiconductor Nanocrystals through Thermodynamically Driven Aggregative Growth

James Cassidy et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates a novel approach to more easily and predictably control the shape evolution of nanocrystals by using small-size nanocrystals as building blocks for larger colloids. Different particle morphologies are achieved through a thermodynamically driven growth using a unique combination of coordinating compounds. The reported growth strategy provides a more precise synthetic control over particle morphologies.

Colloidal Quantum Shells: An Emerging 2D Semiconductor for Energy Applications

James Cassidy et al.

Summary: Low-dimensional semiconductors show great potential for future energy applications, but suffer from energy roll-off under high loads. Colloidal quantum shells, which separate multiple excitons spatially, have been demonstrated to significantly improve exciton lifetimes and quantum yields. This makes quantum shells highly attractive for optoelectronic devices.

Colloidal quantum dot lasers

Young-Shin Park et al.

Summary: Semiconductor nanocrystals, also known as colloidal quantum dots, offer promising properties for optical-gain media that can be manipulated via colloidal techniques. Recent advances in understanding and controlling light amplification processes have led to breakthroughs in optically pumped continuous-wave lasing and development of novel dual-function electroluminescent devices that also function as optically pumped lasers. This review evaluates the state of colloidal quantum dot lasing and discusses challenges and opportunities in the field.

Summary: The research found that in CdS/CdSe/CdS spherical quantum wells (SQWs) nanoscintillators, large-size SQWs can generate more excitons under X-ray excitation, but the increased Auger quenching effect makes large SQWs less effective in terms of timing performance.
