Enantioselective Intermolecular Radical Amidation and Amination of Benzylic C-H Bonds via Dual Copper and Photocatalysis

Xuemeng Chen et al.

Summary: A method for direct access to enantioenriched benzylic amides and carbamate-protected primary benzylamines by C-H functionalization is reported. The enantioselective intermolecular dehydrogenative C-N bond formation is enabled by a combination of a chiral copper catalyst, a photocatalyst, and an oxidant, and it takes place under mild conditions, which allow for a broad substrate scope. The method is compatible with late-stage C-H functionalization and provides easy access to N-15-labeled amides and amines starting from cheap (NH4Cl)-N-15.

Decarboxylative Borylation and Cross-Coupling of (Hetero)aryl Acids Enabled by Copper Charge Transfer Catalysis

Nathan W. Dow et al.

Summary: We have developed a photoinduced strategy that converts (hetero)aryl acids into aryl radicals for ambient-temperature borylation. This method operates under mild conditions and does not require prefunctionalization. Additionally, we have combined catalytic borylation with palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura reactions to access a range of valuable products.

Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer (LMCT) Photochemistry at 3d-Metal Complexes: An Emerging Tool for Sustainable Organic Synthesis

Fabio Julia

Summary: Despite being historically overlooked, the excited-state reactivity of 3d-metal complexes is now gaining recognition in synthetic chemistry. The emergence of photoredox catalysis has changed the perception towards photochemistry, and the utilization of outer-sphere single-electron transfer events is widely acknowledged. A new mode of photoactivation based on inner-sphere reactivity triggered by ligand-to-metal charge-transfer excited states has recently received attention. This mode, known as LMCT-activation, offers unique reactivity profiles and is particularly suitable for Earth-abundant metal complexes.

Radical Decarboxylative Carbometalation of Benzoic Acids: A Solution to Aromatic Decarboxylative Fluorination

Peng Xu et al.

Summary: A variety of aromatic carboxylic acids exist in nature and are synthesized through different methods. The decarboxylative functionalization of benzoic acids is mainly achieved through transition-metal-catalyzed decarboxylative cross couplings. However, the high activation barrier for thermal decarboxylative carbometalation limits the scope of suitable reactions. This study presents a new approach with a low-barrier photoinduced ligand to metal charge transfer to enable radical decarboxylative carbometalation, allowing for previously unrealized general decarboxylative fluorination of benzoic acids.
