Field strength effect on structure, hardness, and crack resistance in single modifier aluminoborosilicate glasses

Aubrey L. Fry et al.

Summary: This study compares the impact of different network modifiers on the indentation properties of ABS glasses. The results show that both hardness and crack resistance increase with higher field strength, contrary to previous reports. Using nuclear magnetic resonance, the study provides evidence of how charge distributions of different modifier species relate to indentation behavior.

Indenting glasses with indenters of varying stiffness and sharpness

Johan F. S. Christensen et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of indenter sharpness and stiffness on the indentation response of oxide glasses were investigated. The study examined the glass deformation mechanism, cracking behavior, and hardness for three different glasses using five different indenters. The results showed that increased indenter sharpness reduced the indentation size effect and lowered crack initiation resistance, while the effect of indenter material was insignificant when the indenter was stiffer than the specimen.

Improving the precision of Vickers indentation measurements in soda-lime glass with increased dwell time

W. Porter Weeks et al.

Summary: Vickers indentation methods are popular for determining hardness, fracture toughness, and crack initiation resistance in silicate glasses due to their simplicity and efficiency. However, obtaining consistent and repeatable results from these measurements is challenging. In this study, we investigated the effects of applied load, dwell time, and post-indentation observation time on the precision of hardness and fracture toughness values for soda-lime silicate glass measured via Vickers microindentation. The results show that low applied loads and short dwell times result in low precision, while longer dwell times lead to higher precision and load-independent fracture toughness. These findings suggest that Vickers microindentation could be a reliable technique for measuring mechanical properties of silicate glass.

Field strength effect on elastoplastic behavior of aluminoborosilicate glass: I. Elastic moduli and indentation size effect

Aubrey L. Fry et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of modifier field strength (FS) on the elastic-plastic responses of aluminoborosilicate (ABS) glasses. Six different network modifier compositions were created to cover a range of cation FS. The results show that the modifier FS has a significant impact on the mechanical and physical properties of ABS glasses, including elastic moduli, Poisson's ratio, indentation size effect, and bow-in parameter.

Lateral-pushing induced surface lift-up during nanoindentation of silicate glass

Linfeng Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, nano-indentation tests were conducted on silicate glasses using a cube-corner indenter, revealing inelastic deformation mechanisms such as shear flow and densification. A newly developed 3D surface analysis method quantified the amplitude of the impression field, showing pile-up and lift-up phenomena near and far from the indent, respectively. The lift-up mechanism was observed for the first time, providing valuable insights into structural evolution during nano-indentation of silicate glass.

Impact of the cation field strength on physical properties and structures of alkali and alkaline-earth borosilicate glasses

Peng Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the cation field strength on the structure and properties of borosilicate glasses. The results show that alkaline-earth metal cations Sr2+ and Ba2+ along with high-CFS La3+ species maximize the hardness and Young's modulus of the glasses. Different combinations of cations exhibit various composition-structure and CFS-property relationships.

Structural densification of lithium phosphoaluminoborate glasses

Pengfei Liu et al.

Summary: The addition of P2O5 in lithium aluminoborate glasses results in a more open and soft network. Upon compression, the coordination numbers of boron and aluminum increase, while the number of bridging oxygens around phosphorous decreases. Glasses with higher P2O5 content show a larger decrease in bridging oxygens, leading to a larger increase in coordination numbers of boron and aluminum.

Structure-property relations in crack-resistant alkaline-earth aluminoborosilicate glasses studied by solid state NMR

Millena Logrado et al.

Summary: The study measured the effect of the average ionic potential of network modifier cations on crack initiation resistance and Young's modulus in alkaline-earth aluminoborosilicate glasses, correlating this with structural properties deduced from solid state NMR. The results suggest that in pure alkaline-earth boroaluminosilicate glasses, the trade-off between crack resistance and modulus can be adjusted by the alkaline-earth oxide inventory. Additionally, the presence of MgO in aluminoborosilicate glasses helps overcome the trade-off issue between high crack resistance and high elasticity modulus, offering new opportunities for designing glasses with both rigidity and crack resistance.
