Preparation, microstructure and ion-irradiation damage behavior of Al4SiC4-added SiC ceramics

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: Highly densified SiC ceramics were fabricated by synthesizing single-phase Al4SiC4 powder with low neutron absorption cross section and mixing it with SiC powder, followed by hot pressing. The densification of the ceramics was greatly enhanced by the decomposition of Al4SiC4 and the formation of aluminosilicate liquid phase during sintering. The resulting SiC ceramics exhibited fine equiaxed grains and excellent mechanical properties.

Low-temperature Pr3Si2C2-assisted liquid-phase sintering of SiC with improved thermal conductivity

Jie Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel Pr3Si2C2 additive was prepared and successfully applied in the liquid-phase sintering of SiC ceramics. It was found that an appropriate amount of additive could improve the sintering rate and thermal conductivity of SiC, while excessive additive could decrease the thermal conductivity due to increased interfacial thermal resistance. SiC materials with optimized amount of additive and grain boundary structure exhibited the highest thermal conductivity.

Ultra-high creep resistant SiC ceramics prepared by rapid hot pressing

Pavol Sajgalik et al.

Summary: The high-temperature compression creep properties of additive-free beta/alpha silicon carbide ceramics fabricated by rapid hot pressing were investigated, showing the ceramics had the lowest creep rate reported in the literature within certain temperature and pressure ranges. The average creep activation energy and stress exponent remained constant along the whole range of investigated parameters, suggesting a creep mechanism involving GB sliding accommodated by GB diffusion and beta-alpha SiC phase transformation.

Joining of SiC using CoFeCrNiCuTi high entropy alloy filler by electric current field assisted sintering

Yihe Liu et al.

Summary: SiC ceramics were successfully brazed at lower temperatures using CoFeCrNiCuTi high-entropy alloy and electric field-assisted sintering technology. The inter-diffusion between the filler and ceramics was improved due to the high-entropy effect and the accelerated diffusion of elements. This approach provides a new and efficient filler system for ceramic brazing.

Summary: A novel layered structure material, Pr3Si2C2, was successfully synthesized using a molten salt approach, and used as a joining filler for carbon fibers reinforced SiC composites. A near-seamless joint was achieved by the newly precipitated SiC grains, which were well densified with the Cf/SiC matrix.
