Unveiling structural features and mechanical properties of amorphous Si2BC3N by density functional theory

Yuchen Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the atomic structural features and mechanical properties of Si2BC3N using ab-initio calculations. It clarifies the chemical bonding types and their proportion, and identifies the tetrahedral and trigonal configurations and their nesting, which contribute to the flexibility of structural characteristics. The balance between tetrahedral and trigonal features through composition tailor is believed to be an effective way for the design of Si-B-C-N ceramics for structural applications.

Composition-dependent structural characteristics and mechanical properties of amorphous SiBCN ceramics by ab-initio calculations

Yuchen Liu et al.

Summary: Using ab-initio calculations, the atomic structure and mechanical properties of amorphous silicoboron carbonitride ceramics with 13 different compositions in the Si-BN-C phase diagram were investigated. The chemical bonds and local structures in the amorphous network are dependent on the elemental composition. The mechanical properties of SiBCN ceramics are greatly influenced by their local structural characteristics. SiB2C3N2 and SiB3C2N3 with low Si contents and moderate C and/or BN contents exhibit high elastic moduli, high tensile/shear strengths, and good debonding capability. The optimization of SiBCN ceramics can be guided based on these discoveries.

Theoretical prediction on structure evolution and optimal properties of silicon modified hexagonal boron nitride as interphase in SiCf/SiC composite

Siyan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of Si doping on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) were predicted and the crystal structures and mechanical properties were analyzed through calculations and simulations. The results showed a significant transition in the structure and mechanical properties of h-BN with increasing Si doping content. In terms of application in SiCf/SiC composites, a certain Si-doped model exhibited the highest debonding potential and demonstrated better self-healing capacity.

Dependence of characteristics of Hf(M)SiBCN (M = Y, Ho, Ta, Mo) thin films on the M choice: Ab-initio and experimental study

Martin Matas et al.

Summary: The study investigates amorphous HfMSiBCN materials through ab initio calculations and magnetron sputtering, aiming to combine high-temperature stability and oxidation resistance with optimized mechanical, optical, and electrical properties. The results show that the properties of HfMSiBCN materials are influenced by the choice and fraction of M, with advantages in high electrical conductivity and hardness for potential applications in high-temperature coating design.
