Steam oxidation and microstructural evolution of rare earth silicate environmental barrier coatings

Mackenzie Ridley et al.

Summary: This study compares the microstructure evolution and steam oxidation kinetics of Si-bond coatings beneath (Y/Yb)DS and YbDS/YbMS EBCs. The results show that the steam oxidation rate of (Y/Yb)DS EBC is reduced compared to YbDS/YbMS.

Evaluating steam oxidation kinetics of environmental barrier coatings

Kenneth Kane et al.

Summary: The study shows that EBCs have a certain effect on reducing the rate of SiO2 formation, especially when paired with a Si bond coating. The adhesion of the coating and roughness of the substrate play a crucial role in the effectiveness of EBCs.

Environmental Barrier Coating Oxidation and Adhesion Strength

Bryan J. Harder et al.

Summary: This study explores the effects of plasma spray-physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD) Yb2Si2O7 environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) on adhesion strength after exposure in a high-temperature steam environment, with analysis conducted using electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction to evaluate changes in morphology, oxide layer thickness, composition, and crystal structure. The strength of the system is also evaluated with respect to oxidation rate to provide a qualitative understanding of coating durability.

Oxidation of 3D-printed SiC in air and steam environments

Kenneth Kane et al.

Summary: The study compared the high-temperature oxidation of 3D-printed SiC and CVD SiC, finding that thicker oxide scales were formed on 3D-printed SiC surfaces due to tensile hoop stresses driven by oxidation volume expansion during steam oxidation.
