Integrating coalescent-based species delimitation with ecological niche modeling delimited two species within the Stewartia sinensis complex (Theaceae)

Han-Yang Lin et al.

Summary: Accurate species delimitation is crucial for estimating species diversity accurately and is fundamental to most branches of biology. This study applied integrative approaches in phylogeny, ecology, and morphology to examine species boundaries within the Stewartia sinensis complex in China and proposed two distinct species based on niche differentiation and morphometric analyses.

Genomic data reveal two distinct species from the widespread alpine ginger Roscoea tibetica Batalin (Zingiberaceae)

Li Li et al.

Summary: Species delimitation is a crucial step in exploring biodiversity, especially when dealing with widespread species that exhibit continuous phenotypic variation. This study used genotyping by sequencing, morphological examination, species distribution models, and demographic history simulation to investigate the cryptic diversity of Roscoea tibetica in the Hengduan Mountains of China. The results revealed that previously reported R. tibetica actually consists of two distinct species, with evidence of recent contact between the two lineages. The study highlights the importance of caution and advanced species delimitation when dealing with species with large-scale morphological variation.

The inflated significance of neutral genetic diversity in conservation genetics

Joao C. Teixeira et al.

Summary: Conservation genetics aims to evaluate population health and extinction risk based on genetic diversity levels, but neutral genetic diversity is not the only factor affecting species extinction risk. A deeper understanding of functional genetic diversity, demographic history, and ecological relationships is necessary for developing effective conservation genetic strategies.

Leaf epidermal micromorphology defining the clades in Cinnamomum (Lauraceae)

Zeng Gang et al.

Summary: This study sampled 48 species of Asian Cinnamomum and conducted leaf micromorphological observations, revealing two distinct types of leaf upper epidermis in the genus. These micromorphological characters were found to be clade-specific, supporting recent molecular phylogeny results.

Research Progress in Plant Molecular Systematics of Lauraceae

Yongjing Tian et al.

Summary: Lauraceae, a large family of woody plants with high ecological and economic value, has long been controversial in terms of tribal and generic division and phylogenetic relationships. Recent studies on the molecular phylogeny of Lauraceae have shifted focus from morphology to molecular systematics, particularly within the Cinnamomeae, Laureae, and Perseeae tribes known as 'the Core Lauraceae'. By utilizing gene fragments, chloroplast genomes, and DNA barcoding analyses, progress has been made in clarifying the phylogenetic relationships and controversies within the Core Lauraceae, as well as the development of chloroplast genomes and DNA barcodes. Further research utilizing whole genome analysis and different inflorescence types is suggested to enhance understanding of the phylogenetic relationships and taxonomy of Lauraceae.
