Scale discrepancy paradox between observation and modelling in fractured reservoir models in oil and gas industry

P. D. Richard et al.

Summary: The appraisal and development of fractured reservoirs are challenging due to variations in reservoir quality and natural fracture distribution. This paper presents a case study in Egypt to illustrate the discrepancy between the scale of observation and the simplification imposed by modelling. Detailed observations and regional geological context are integrated to build a conceptual fracture model, which is then simplified to generate 3D discrete fracture network scenarios. The key tuning parameters for dynamic match are the grid cell orientation and the width of the modelled fault damage zone.

Multiscale lineament analysis and permeability heterogeneity of fractured crystalline basement blocks

Alberto Ceccato et al.

Summary: The multiscale analysis of the geometric and spatial organization properties of the fracture network in the Rolvsnes granodiorite lineament network reveals a scale-invariant spatial distribution. The identified sets within the network show varying relative abundance, spatial organization, and occupancy with scale, forming a hierarchical network. Each set follows power-law scaling laws for lineament length, density, and intensity.

3D Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) models of damage zone fluid corridors within a reservoir-scale normal fault in carbonates: Multiscale approach using field data and UAV imagery

Luca Smeraglia et al.

Summary: The study combined field-collected structural data and a virtual outcrop model constructed from drone imagery to characterize the fracture distribution within the damage zone of a low-displacement carbonate-hosted fault in Italy. Results showed that fractures in the damage zone exhibit varying degrees of maturity and permeabilities, with the potential for the damage zone to serve as fracture corridors for fluid flow in subsurface reservoirs. This suggests that changes in subsurface permeabilities in carbonate fractured reservoirs may be associated with high permeability fracture zones developed within the damage zones of low-displacement faults.

Fracture density variations within a reservoir-scale normal fault zone: A case study from shallow-water carbonates of southern Italy

Giovanni Camanni et al.

Summary: By studying an incipient fault zone in shallow-water carbonates of the southern Apennines thrust belt, we found that areas of denser fractures are associated with different structures within the fault zone, including antithetic faults, branch points, and fault segments with significant displacement gradients. This may help in locating volumes of dense fracturing and enhanced permeability within faulted reservoirs.

Constraints upon fault zone properties by combined structural analysis of virtual outcrop models and discrete fracture network modelling

Alberto Ceccato et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between meso-scale fracture patterns and bulk permeability in fault zones using Virtual Outcrop Models and Discrete Fracture Network modeling. It emphasizes the fundamental role of mesoscopic fracture patterns in controlling the bulk petrophysical properties of large fault zones. The results show a decreasing power-law trend of structural permeability within the damage zone with increasing distance from the fault cores.

The joint sets on the Lilstock Benches, UK. Observations based on mapping a full resolution UAV-based image

Martijn Passchier et al.

Summary: Manual mapping of a full-resolution UAV-based dataset and DEM of the wave-cut Lilstock Benches resulted in the identification of up to eight successive sets of joints, revealing unique characteristics in terms of shape, orientation, spatial distribution and cross-cutting relations in the whole outcrop. The presence of low-angle crossings and junctions of joints suggest periods of partial joint sealing and reactivation.

Summary: This study utilized an unmanned aerial vehicle to extract the complete fracture network of the Lilstock outcrop from high-resolution photogrammetric images, developing graph-based functions to resolve common issues in automatic fracture tracing. The dataset provides valuable insights into large-scale natural fracture networks and highlights spatial variations that can occur even in weakly deformed rocks at short length scales.
