Paleocene-Miocene topographic and tectonic evolution of the northern central Andean plateau, southern Peru

Nandini Kar et al.

Summary: The Paleocene-Miocene sedimentary successions in southern Peru reveal the growth history of the northern Altiplano Plateau and foreland basin system. Through analyzing paleoelevation history, the study determines significant surface uplift during primary upper crustal shortening. New age models and calculations based on isotopic values suggest rapid surface uplift during late Miocene, potentially due to lower crustal flow and removal of lithosphere materials.

Crustal Thickening of the Northern Central Andean Plateau Inferred From Trace Elements in Zircon

Kurt E. Sundell et al.

Summary: Research on the northern Central Andean Plateau suggests a long-term crustal thickening since the Late Cretaceous, with significant increases in crustal thickness occurring at 80-55 million years ago and from 35 million years ago to present, coinciding with high-flux magmatism. During an intermediate period, decreased magmatic activity due to shallow subduction obscured the magmatic record, but crustal thickening continued via crustal shortening.

Provenance of the Middle Jurassic-Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of the Arequipa Basin (South Peru) and implications for the geodynamic evolution of the Central Andes

Cesar Chavez et al.

Summary: The study of sedimentary rocks in the Arequipa Basin from the Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous reveals a changing provenance with contributions from Eastern Cordillera, Altiplano, Coastal Cordillera, and Precambrian sources. The basin is shown to have evolved from a rift-like setting to a retroarc foreland basin, with a younger control of Andean subduction than previously thought.

Catastrophic slab loss in southwestern Pangea preserved in the mantle and igneous record

Guido M. Gianni et al.

Summary: The origin of the Permian-Triassic Choiyoi silicic large igneous province is assessed by linking the igneous record, plate-kinematic reconstructions, and the deep mantle. This study suggests a massive slab loss in Pangea as the cause of the magmatism. The integration of plate-kinematic reconstructions and lower mantle slab record supports the conclusion that the Choiyoi Magmatic Province resulted from a large-scale slab loss event in Pangea. Geochemical data and paleogeographic coincidence further indicate a slab break-off event in the Permian period.

The Relationship Between Inverted Normal Faults and Pure Thrusting During the Tectonic Inversion of the Domeyko Cordillera, Northern Chile: Structural and Seismic Interpretation and Analog Modeling Experiments

Cristopher Lopez et al.

Summary: The orogenic growth of the Domeyko Cordillera in northern Chile is caused by positive tectonic inversion. This study validates this interpretation through field data and 2-D reflection seismic profiles. Analog models were used to analyze the relationship between extensional structures, inversion structures, and pure thrust faulting. The study proposes a kinematic model that explains the structural styles observed in the Domeyko Cordillera.

Crustal anatomy and evolution of a subduction-related orogenic system: Insights from the Southern Central Andes (22-35°S)

Laura Giambiagi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Southern Central Andes using a new thermomechanical model and variations in tectonic shortening-thickening. The results show that low-strength zones in the upper-mid crust play a crucial role in triggering crustal shortening, uplift, and exhumation, as well as shallow crustal seismicity.

Gondwanan Inheritance on the Building of the Western Central Andes (Domeyko Range, Chile): Structural and Thermochronological Approach (U-Pb and 40Ar/39Ar)

M. Espinoza et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of Gondwanan heritage in the building of the Central Andes in northern Chile, using detrital U-Pb zircon and 40Ar/39Ar muscovite geochronology, along with structural analyses. It reveals that the Triassic rift had a significant impact on the structural style of the region, with implications for the tectonic evolution of the Domeyko Range.

From long-lived batholith construction to giant porphyry copper deposit formation: petrological and zircon chemical evolution of the Quellaveco District, Southern Peru

Chetan L. Nathwani et al.

Summary: Porphyry Cu ore deposits are rare products of arc magmatism that often form spatiotemporal clusters in magmatic arcs. This study highlights the importance of high-pressure magma differentiation fostered by strongly compressive tectonic regimes in generating world-class porphyry Cu deposits, as shown by the magmatic evolution of the Yarabamba Batholith in Southern Peru and its association with the Quellaveco porphyry Cu deposit formation.

Andean mountain building since the Late Cretaceous: A paleoelevation reconstruction

Lydian M. Boschman

Summary: The Andes, the longest continental mountain range on Earth, started forming in the Late Cretaceous with highly diachronous uplift in different regions. Reconstructing the timing of surface uplift is crucial for understanding continental-scale moisture transport, the origin and evolution of the Amazon River and Rainforest, and the coevolution of solid Earth, landscapes, climate, and life in South America.
