An EPIC Tikhonov Regularization: Application to Quasi-Static Fault Slip Inversion

F. Ortega-Culaciati et al.

Summary: This study discusses the effects of regularization methods on estimating subsurface fault slip and proposes a novel regularization based on EPIC to improve the stability, quality, and interpretability of fault slip estimates. The use of EPIC in subduction zone earthquakes helps counterbalance spatial heterogeneity of observational constraints on fault slip, leading to robust slip estimates. The methodology is demonstrated by inferring co-seismic slip from geodetic data for the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake, obtaining results similar to those inferred using an unregularized fully Bayesian approach.
