On-site carwash wastewater treatment and reuse: a systematic review

Javad Torkashvand et al.

Summary: The carwash wastewater has unique quality characteristics and requires various treatment processes. The membrane process is the most commonly used method, followed by chemical coagulation, electrocoagulation, electrooxidation, and membrane bioreactor. The treatment efficiency for pollutants such as turbidity, oil content, and COD is reported to be high. However, there are limitations such as low water recovery rates, rapid fouling, sludge production, energy consumption, and changes in effluent quality. Therefore, short treatment time, optimal efficiency, operation condition, and high water recovery ratio are critical aspects of on-site treatment and reuse of carwash wastewater.

Insight into the generation of hydroxyl radicals by photo-electrocoagulation process via active chlorine

J. Trevino-Resendez et al.

Summary: Photo-electrocoagulation with aluminum electrodes is an effective method for degrading low concentration levels of organic pollutants, due to its ability to produce highly reactive oxygen species such as (OH)• radicals. The production of (OH)• radicals is influenced by operating parameters, with the highest concentration observed at pH 3.

Removal of metronidazole from wastewater by electrocoagulation with chloride ions electrolyte: The role of reactive chlorine species and process optimization

Rui Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contribution of reactive chlorine species (RCS) to the removal of metronidazole (MNZ) in the electrocoagulation (EC) process. The results show that RCS dominate the degradation of MNZ and proposed the decomposition pathways of MNZ. Evaluation of the toxicity of the main degradation products reveals that most intermediates are less toxic. Additionally, flocs were found to adsorb part of MNZ.

Electro-oxidation of amoxicillin using titanium electrodes electrophoretically coated by iridium or ruthenium with tantalum oxides

Itzel Leon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the IrO2/Ta2O5|Ti 70:30 electrode is most effective for AMX electro-oxidation, achieving 99.23% removal measured by HPLC-UV-Vis, 81.13% by COD removal, and a current efficiency of 41.1% in 0.1 mol L(-1) Na(2)SO(4) after 6 hours of applying 15 mA. The results are attributed to the larger surface area and higher generation of(center dot)OH radicals compared to other electrodes under neutral pH conditions.

Electrocoagulation processes: A general review about role of electro-generated flocs in pollutant removal

Isaac Delove Tegladza et al.

Summary: Electrocoagulation is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method for wastewater treatment, reducing chemical dosage, sludge generation, and high costs associated with traditional chemical coagulation. The mechanisms of pollutant removal by electro-generated flocs mainly include adsorption, coprecipitation, charge neutralization, surface complexation, and radical oxidation. Coupling AOP-EC can enhance radical generation for efficient removal of organic pollutants.

Photo-assisted electrochemical advanced oxidation processes for the disinfection of aqueous solutions: A review

Josue Daniel Garcia-Espinoza et al.

Summary: This study provides an overview of water disinfection methods using photo-assisted electrochemical advanced oxidation processes, highlighting the synergism between electrochemically produced active species and photo-generated radicals. The research found that quasi-direct oxidation is the predominant inactivation mechanism, with the photo-electrocatalytic process using semiconductor materials being the most studied method. Advantages, disadvantages, trends, and perspectives for water disinfection in photo-assisted EAOPs are also analyzed in this work.
