Novel donor-acceptor-acceptor ternary conjugated microporous polymers with boosting forward charge separation and suppressing backward charge recombination for photocatalytic reduction of uranium (VI)

Fengtao Yu et al.

Summary: A series of D-A(1)-A(2) terpolymers were developed through adjusting the monomer feed molar ratio, which can effectively inhibit charge recombination and facilitate charge separation for the photoreduction of uranium. Among them, PTrSO-2 with a FMR of 0.75:1.0:0.75 achieved a remarkable 99.5% photocatalytic U(VI) reduction efficiency within 120 min of visible-light irradiation, surpassing most reported photocatalysts for similar applications. This work provides a new strategy and unconventional thinking for the development of CMPs photocatalysts in the treatment of radioactive wastewater.

Adsorption of low molecular weight food relevant polyphenols on cross-linked agarose gel

Pamela Raquel Rivera-Tovar et al.

Summary: In this study, the adsorption properties of five relevant low molecular weight polyphenols in agro-industrial waste extracts were measured and characterized. The Langmuir and Freundlich models were found to adequately describe the adsorption behavior of the polyphenols. The affinity between the polyphenols and agarose varied under different liquid phase conditions, and factors such as temperature, water content, and ethanol/acetic acid ratio influenced the adsorption. All the studied adsorption processes were found to be spontaneous and thermodynamically feasible, and the polyphenol molecules exhibited lower order at the polyphenol/agarose interface during the adsorption process.

Electrosorption of uranium (VI) from aqueous solution by phytic acid modified chitosan: An experimental and DFT study

Jie Huang et al.

Summary: This study aims to remove uranium ions from nuclear wastewater by electrosorption, using the complex of chitosan and phytic acid as the electrode material. The experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of phytic acid effectively enhances the adsorption capacity, selectivity, and reusability of chitosan. The study also reveals that the selective adsorption mechanism of uranium ions is related to the inner-sphere complexation between UO22+ and the O atom of the P=O group.

Biomineralization of Uranium-Phosphates Fueled by Microbial Degradation of Isosaccharinic Acid (ISA)

Gina Kuippers et al.

Summary: The fate of U(VI) in microbial enrichment cultures with ISA as the sole carbon source has been studied under fermentation and Fe(III)-reducing conditions, showing that U(VI) precipitates as insoluble U(VI)-phosphates in fermentation, and as reduced U(IV)-phosphates in Fe(III)-reducing conditions, possibly mediated by metal-reducing bacteria. This suggests the potential for a microbially mediated bio-barrier surrounding a GDF, which can evolve and have a controlling impact on the fate of radionuclides.
