The important role of surface hydroxyl groups in aluminum activation during phyllosilicate mineral acidification

Ke-Wei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of hydroxyl groups on the activation of aluminum (Al) during acidification in phyllosilicate minerals. Various modification methods were used to alter the interlayer spaces of the minerals, resulting in inhibited Al activation. The inhibition effect varied among different mineral types. The findings can provide insights for developing new technologies to inhibit soil acidification and Al activation.

Aluminum mobilization as influenced by soil organic matter during soil and mineral acidification: A constant pH study

Ke-wei Li et al.

Summary: Soil acidification is a challenge to food security due to the production of toxic free aluminum ions. This study investigated the effect of different minerals and organic matter on the exchangeable aluminum ions during soil acidification. The results showed that montmorillonite consumed more acid than kaolinite due to its larger cation exchange capacity. Additionally, the presence of more organic matter in Ultisols improved their acid buffering performance and inhibited the mobilization of aluminum ions.
