Relating 137Cs and sediment yield from uncultivated catchments: the role of particle size composition of soil and sediment in calculating soil erosion rates at the catchment scale

P. Porto et al.

Summary: Soil loss is a significant consequence of land degradation, impacting the productivity of agricultural and forested areas and the equilibrium of downstream aquatic ecosystems. The use of Cs-137 as a tracer has been effective for identifying areas at risk of land degradation, but specific information on soil and sediment particle size is needed to estimate erosion or deposition. This study demonstrates that the assumption of particle size selectivity in erosion processes is not universally applicable and traditional approaches cannot be used to estimate the particle size correction factor.

Combining plot measurements and a calibrated RUSLE model to investigate recent changes in soil erosion in upland areas in Southern Italy

P. Porto et al.

Summary: Soil erosion has become a serious environmental problem in many countries, and the impacts of climate change are increasing the erosion rates. A study in Southern Italy found that soil erosion rates have been increasing in the past 20-25 years, despite a decrease in annual rainfall. The study suggests that models like RUSLE can help understand the changes in erosion rates and isolate the effect of climate change on soil loss. Additionally, shorter time interval measurements of rainfall are necessary to explore the effects of climate change in Mediterranean areas.

Comparing long-term observations of sediment yield with estimates of soil erosion rate based on recent 137Cs measurements. Results from an experimental catchment in Southern Italy

Paolo Porto et al.

Summary: The recent increase in soil erosion rates in Southern Italy highlights the importance of identifying areas at higher environmental risks. Various techniques, including experimental sites and prediction models, have been used in the past few decades for this purpose. The use of radiotracers, particularly Cs-137, has been suggested as an alternative and complementary tool to traditional methods. However, certain assumptions related to the Cs-137 technique still need to be tested and validated for robust estimates of soil erosion rate.

Summary: Soil erosion is a significant environmental threat, particularly in regions with intensive agricultural activity and affected by climate change. Vegetation cover plays a crucial role in reducing water erosion; selecting appropriate crop systems and soil management methods can effectively mitigate soil loss.
