The Slugs-test for extrusion-based additive manufacturing: Protocol, analysis and practical limits

Nicolas Ducoulombier et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel rheological technique for assessing the yield stress of printable materials at nozzle exit in extrusion-based 3D printing. The technique analyzes the non-Newtonian flow at the nozzle exit, which leads to the formation of material drops. By measuring the mass distribution of the drops with a simple balance, the yield stress can be computed, and material homogeneity can be assessed. The technique is experimentally validated on simple materials before application to a real printing system, with equations derived for yield stress computation and discussion on accuracy and applicability range.

Oldroyd's model and the foundation of modern rheology of yield stress fluids

Philippe Coussot et al.

Summary: Oldroyd's 1946 formulation of the constitutive equation of yield stress fluids laid the foundation of modern rheology of yield stress fluids, by considering their simple shear behavior in the plastic regime, prescribing expressions for their behavior before and beyond yielding. Researchers have tested and refined Oldroyd's ideas, reviewed experimental methods for testing implications and determining rheological parameters. The future of investigations into what happens prior to yielding is also discussed.

Extensional gravity-rheometry (EGR) for yield stress fluids

A. Geffrault et al.

Summary: A new method for measuring the extensional flow properties of yield stress fluids was proposed in this study, which involved analyzing the deformation and stress data to derive the elongational flow curve of the material under different flow conditions. By observing and measuring the deformations of filaments, as well as computing stress data, the researchers were able to identify the elongational behavior of the materials at various strain rates.
