Sub-fossil chironomids as indicators of hydrological changes in the shallow and high-altitude lake Shen Co, Tibetan Plateau, over the past two centuries

Sonja Rigterink et al.

Summary: Understanding the climate dynamics and monsoon patterns on the Tibetan Plateau is crucial for predicting the rising lake levels and species changes. This study examines sediment cores from Shen Co Lake and reveals a period of dry conditions from 1830 to 1921, followed by a gradual rise in lake levels since 1921, reaching its peak after 2006. These findings are consistent with climate reconstructions in other parts of the Tibetan Plateau, suggesting that warmer climate and increased precipitation since the beginning of the 20th century have contributed to the rise in lake levels. Additionally, this study highlights the importance of chironomid morphotypes as paleolimnological indicators.

Response of Travertine Dam to Precipitation over the Past 800 Years in Zabuye Salt Lake, Southwestern Tibetan Plateau

Mingming Li et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the Zabuye Salt Lake travertine dam as the research object to analyze the carbon and oxygen isotopes of travertine and propose that they can be used as a precipitation index. The precipitation records of Zabuye Salt Lake over the last 800 years show a warm-dry/cold-moist climate pattern, influenced by the Indian summer monsoon and temperature change driven by solar radiation.

The imbalance of the Asian water tower

Tandong Yao et al.

Summary: The Hindu Kush-Karakoram-Himalayan system, known as the Third Pole, is the largest global store of frozen water after the polar regions. It provides water supply to almost 2 billion people. However, atmospheric warming has caused an imbalance in this system, altering water resources in downstream countries. Future predictions suggest that global warming will amplify this imbalance, alleviating water scarcity in some regions while increasing it in others.

Summary: By studying 25 lakes on the Tibetan Plateau, it was found that lakes in the southern and western plateau tended to shrink until 2010, after which they began to gradually expand, but the overall trend is still shrinking; Lakes in the central plateau, northwest plateau, and northeast plateau tend to expand overall, with the expansion being attributed to not only precipitation but also the melting of glaciers and permafrost; The changes in the lakes have gone through three phases, namely a slight decrease, a rapid increase, and a slowdown in the last decade.

Chironomidae Morphological Types and Functional Feeding Groups as a Habitat Complexity Vestige

Olga Antczak-Orlewska et al.

Summary: Chironomid (Diptera: Chironomidae) larvae play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems, with their morphological traits and feeding habits serving as indicator features for reconstructions of habitat changes. The study found that habitat substratum structure, vegetation, and physicochemical conditions are associated with both the feeding types and morphological traits of Chironomidae larvae, providing a valuable tool for future habitat change reconstructions.

Anthropogenic warming of Tibetan Plateau and constrained future projection

Tianjun Zhou et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the rapid warming of the Tibetan Plateau is mainly attributable to human influence, particularly the contribution of greenhouse gases. The ensemble models tend to underestimate the warming trend caused by human influence, suggesting a potentially even warmer future for the Tibetan Plateau with increased geohazard risks in the Asian water tower.

Tibetan Plateau Precipitation Modulated by the Periodically Coupled Westerlies and Asian Monsoon

Anning Cui et al.

Summary: By reconstructing a 1,656-year mean annual precipitation record using fossil pollen assemblages from the annually laminated sediments of a lake in the Tibetan Plateau, researchers have identified three dominant precipitation cycles of approximately 200, 88, and 60 years. These cycles suggest that the current high precipitation in the region may continue for the next several decades, as it results from the superposition of cyclic highs in precipitation.
