Why Does Psychotherapy Work and for Whom? Hormonal Answers

Susanne Fischer et al.

Summary: The questions of who benefits from psychotherapy and why have been the focus of research for five decades. This article explores the potential role of hormones in answering these questions, specifically cortisol, oxytocin, and oestradiol. While cortisol is most established, both cortisol and oxytocin are implicated in psychotherapy, but a causal role is still to be proven. Furthermore, hormones play a different role in the psychotherapy of depression versus anxiety. The research directions outlined in this article may help match patients' endocrine states with psychotherapy and manipulate hormonal levels to improve outcomes.

Psychometric properties of the German version of the fears of compassion scales

Miriam Biermann et al.

Summary: The study investigated the potential impact of fears of compassion on mental health and therapeutic progress. Through the German version of the FCS scale, the reliability and validity were confirmed in different samples. The questionnaire effectively distinguishes between general population and patients, aiding in identifying potential obstacles in cultivating compassion in psychotherapeutic treatments.
