Battery thermal management systems based on nanofluids for electric vehicles

Mohammad Ali Abdelkareem et al.

Summary: This article addresses the crucial issue of the continuous rapid growth of the world population and the need for ambitious innovations like electric vehicles (EVs) to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector. The control of the working temperature in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for EVs is emphasized as a critical concern. Various cooling methods, including those utilizing nanofluids, are reviewed for battery pack thermal management. The combination of nanofluids with phase change materials (PCMs) and heat pipes (HPs) for battery thermal management systems (BTMSs) is also discussed. It is found that nanofluids effectively improve the thermal management of batteries, and hybrid cooling systems based on nanofluids outperform single BTMSs in terms of temperature uniformity. Additionally, the article highlights the need for further research to enhance the technology and advancements of EVs.

Yu Jiang et al.

Summary: Passive and active methods of temperature control in a battery pack were studied using phase-change materials (PCMs) and forced nanofluid flow. Numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of different nanoparticle shapes and nanofluid velocity on the battery temperature and heat transfer coefficient. Blade-shaped nanoparticles demonstrated the greatest decrease in temperature and amount of molten PCM. Increasing the nanofluid velocity resulted in a reduction in molten PCM and an increase in HTCO nanofluid, as well as lower battery and nanofluid temperatures.

Ozge Yetik et al.

Summary: Batteries are crucial for hybrid electric aircraft and their operating temperature greatly affects their performance and lifespan. Therefore, effective thermal management is vital. This study investigates the cooling of a battery module using nanofluids comprising nanoparticles and refrigerants at different ratios. The research also examines the impact of nanofluid volume ratio, input speeds, and discharge rates on the battery's thermal and electrical properties. Additionally, the study includes the consideration of busbars, which connect the batteries and play a role in thermal management. The results indicate that nanofluid cooling is more effective than air cooling, with different effectiveness observed depending on the type of refrigerant used. Moreover, the inlet velocity of the nanofluid affects the temperature range of the battery module.
