Quantifying the role of the lattice in metal-insulator phase transitions

Alexandru B. Georgescu et al.

Summary: Determining the dominant contribution in phase transitions involving structural and electronic changes has been challenging. In this study, a general formalism is introduced to address this problem and is applied to metal-insulator transitions in two material families. The results reveal that electron-lattice coupling is key to stabilizing the insulating state in both rare-earth perovskite nickelates (RNiO3) and Ruddlesden-Popper calcium ruthenates (Ca2RuO4).

Summary: By controlling the thickness of NdNiO3 layers in superlattices, the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in correlated oxides can be studied and oxide functionalities can be controlled. The results demonstrate the importance of reducing dimensions in manipulating oxide properties.

Crossover between distinct symmetries in solid solutions of rare earth nickelates

Jennifer Fowlie et al.

Summary: The study analyzed thin film solid solutions combining NdNiO3 and LaNiO3, two materials with the perovskite structure but distinct space groups, using a synergistic approach of Raman spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the structural crossover mechanism depends on the substrate selected, with implications for analog-tuning of physical properties in future functional materials based on these compounds.
