Exfoliation of 2D van der Waals crystals in ultrahigh vacuum for interface engineering

Zhenyu Sun et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures have been widely studied for their potential applications in electronic, optoelectronic, and spintronic devices. However, achieving atomically flat and clean interfaces in 2D heterostructures remains challenging. This study overcomes this challenge by exfoliating 2D materials in an ultrahigh vacuum, providing a universal method for preparing heterostructures with ideal interfaces and enabling the investigation of previously unattainable properties of different systems.

Directed exfoliating and ordered stacking of transition-metal-dichalcogenides

Yanshuang Li et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional van der Waals crystals allow for novel combinations of physical properties by controlling the stacking order or twist angle of individual layers. However, the current exfoliation methods lack sufficient information on lattice orientation, hindering the systematic study of multilayer assemblies. This paper presents a distinguishable exfoliation method based on gold favor epitaxy, which enables the precise control of lattice orientation while achieving high-quality and large-size monolayers. This approach has the potential to facilitate the development of ordered stacking in multilayer structures.

Direct Imaging of Antiferromagnetic Domains and Anomalous Layer-Dependent Mirror Symmetry Breaking in Atomically Thin MnPS3

Zhuoliang Ni et al.

Summary: A cryogenic second-harmonic generation microscopy was developed to study a van der Waals antiferromagnet MnPS3, revealing multiple antiferromagnetic orders and structural changes at different temperatures. Strain tuning experiments suggest that the symmetry crossover at ten layers is likely an intrinsic property of the material.

Van der Waals epitaxial growth of air-stable CrSe2 nanosheets with thickness-tunable magnetic order

Bo Li et al.

Summary: The research discovered that CrSe2 nanosheets can be grown on a WSe2 substrate, displaying stable environmental stability and tunable thickness. No significant changes in surface roughness or magnetic properties were observed in these heterostructures after months of exposure in air. Charge transfer from the WSe2 substrate and interlayer coupling within CrSe2 were found to play critical roles in the magnetic order of CrSe2 nanosheets.

Engineering antiferromagnetic topological insulators in two-dimensional NaMnBi

Xinying Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a topological switch between normal insulator and AFM TI in two-dimensional NaMnBi quintuple layers is theoretically demonstrated. Using first-principles calculations, the researchers investigated the structure, stability, magnetism, and electronic properties, showing that the band gap and topology can be effectively tuned. The results not only expand the understanding of magnetic topological states but also propose potential applications in topological AFM spintronics.

Topological classification of nodal-line semimetals in square-net materials

Inho Lee et al.

Summary: This study classified the Fermi surface topology and Berry phase of square-net-layered materials with the P4/nmm space group based on first-principles analysis of Berry phases in each material. It was found that the variation of electron-hole asymmetry and the change of chemical potential play essential roles in yielding various topological Fermi surfaces. By determining these factors, a phase diagram of Fermi surface topologies was constructed and three-dimensional Fermi surface topologies were classified, reproducing quantum oscillation and spectroscopy results for various square-net compounds.
