Temperature and Pressure Dependences of the Electronic and Crystal Structures of Yb4TGe8 (T = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) Studied by High-resolution X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction, and Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Hitoshi Yamaoka et al.

Summary: The electronic structure of Yb4CrGe8 and Yb4MnGe8 Kondo lattice systems was investigated using high-resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy, revealing temperature and pressure dependencies on the Yb valence state. The hybridization of Cr's 3d orbitals with the Yb band was observed at low temperatures, with the Yb valence rapidly increasing under pressure. The compressibility along the b axis was found to be larger than along the a and c axes.

Valence Transitions in Yb1+xIn1-xCu4 Studied by High-resolution X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction, and Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Hitoshi Yamaoka et al.

Summary: The temperature- and pressure-induced valence transitions in Yb-rich compounds Yb1+xIn1-xCu4 were studied using high-resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy. A correlation between the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and the Yb valence was observed, which could be described by the Anderson model. The valence transition temperature of Yb1+xIn1-xCu4 was found to be insensitive to chemical pressure compared to YbIn1-xAgxCu4, possibly due to differences in electronic structure above the Fermi level.

Anomalous low-temperature physical properties of the ytterbium-based Kondo-lattice compounds Yb4TGe8(T = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni)

Shunsuke Yamanaka et al.

Summary: In this study, the magnetic, thermal, and transport properties of ytterbium-based layered compounds Yb4TGe8 (T = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) were systematically investigated. At high temperatures, the compounds show typical behavior for the Kondo-lattice system and exhibit high anisotropy due to orbital moments in the degenerate ground state. At low temperatures, additional magnetic correlation enhances the magnetic susceptibility, and both the heat capacity and electrical resistivity deviate from Fermi-liquid-like behavior. These unconventional behaviors at low temperatures are attributed to the strongly correlated characters of T atoms in the conduction band.

Direct Observation of Pressure-induced Yb Valence Transition in YbInCu4

Hitoshi Yamaoka et al.

Summary: The Yb valence state and Cu electronic structure of YbInCu4 were measured using high-resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy, showing pressure-induced disappearance of the valence transition at 13K and suggesting charge transfer from Yb to Cu sites.
