The flashover of epoxy initiated by micron metal particles under DC voltage: phenomenon and mechanism

Bo Qi et al.

Summary: Epoxy post-insulator is a crucial component in SF6 gas-insulated DC wall bushing and plays an irreplaceable role in high voltage direct current transmission projects. Flashovers occur frequently on the post-insulators due to the presence of numerous tiny metal particles, which alter the insulation state of the surface. However, the relationship between the microstructure of the material and the macroscopic electrical properties during flashovers remains controversial. To investigate the impact of particles on flashover characteristics, particles generated from wear of the spring in the DC wall bushing were selected. The study measured the surface potential decay and the DC flashover voltage of epoxy attached with particles.

Radiation electron trajectory modulated DC surface flashover of polyimide in vacuum

Xiaoping Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the surface flashover properties on the vacuum-dielectric interface irradiated by electrons. A 'three-segment' curve is discovered, showing the trend of increasing, decreasing, and stabilizing surface flashover voltage of polyimide with increasing electrode gap distance. Based on the simulation of electron trajectories, a model combining the effects of both kinetic and deposited electrons on surface flashover is proposed. This provides guidance for improving surface flashover voltage during electron irradiation.

Excellent Vacuum Pulsed Flashover Characteristics Achieved inDielectric Insulators Functionalized by Electronegative Halogen-Phenyl and Naphthyl Groups

Jiale Mao et al.

Summary: This paper explores the importance of designing electrical insulation materials with excellent surface flashover strength in a vacuum environment. The research focuses on using electronegative groups, such as halogen-phenyl and aromatic pi-conjugated naphthyl groups, to improve the vacuum flashover characteristics of polystyrene (PS), a commonly used polymer dielectric material. The study demonstrates that introducing strong electronegative groups can inhibit the triggering of vacuum flashover, delay the flashover process, and significantly increase the vacuum flashover voltage.

Evolution of vacuum surface flashover for angled dielectric insulators with particle-in-cell simulation

Jianwei Zhang et al.

Summary: By using the gas diffusion model and particle-in-cell method, the surface flashover phenomenon at the insulator-vacuum interface was simulated. It was found that the gas pressure near the electrodes is higher and negative charges accumulation leads to the weakening of the electric field and suppression of secondary electron emission. The study provides a deep understanding of vacuum surface flashover.

The surface flashover process under positive lightning impulse voltage: initial stage and evolution

Yang Meng et al.

Summary: This paper studies the development process of surface flashover using different methods, including the initial process of positive surface streamers, the evolution of streamers in the air, and the influence of surface trap energy level on flashover development. The results show that the initial ionization process of surface flashover is affected by the collision ionization between initial electrons and gas molecules and the photoionization of high-energy photons. The ionization of gas molecules and the photoelectric emission of the insulator surface play important roles in the initial development of surface flashover.

Higher Harmonics in Multipactor Induced Plasma Ionization Breakdown near a Dielectric Surface

De-Qi Wen et al.

Summary: This Letter reports the novel physics of higher harmonic (HH) generation of the normal electric field near a dielectric surface in multipactor induced plasma ionization breakdown, as determined by kinetic particle-in-cell simulations. The observed HH frequency is around ten times the fundamental rf driving frequency, but lower than the electron plasma frequency. A constructed theory indicates that stream plasma interaction-induced instability is the mechanism of HH generation in the collisional regime. The HH frequency and its corresponding growth rate of the HH oscillation amplitude from the theory are in good agreement with kinetic particle-in-cell simulations.

Comparing simulations and experiments of positive streamers in air: steps toward model validation

Xiaoran Li et al.

Summary: The authors compared simulations and experiments of single positive streamer discharges in air at 100 mbar, and found good qualitative agreement in terms of optical emission profiles, streamer velocity and radius between experiment and simulation. However, there were some quantitative differences, with the simulated streamer velocity being 20-30% lower and the simulated radius 20-30% smaller than the experimental values. The effects of various parameters on the agreement between model and experiment were studied, with an increase in gas temperature potentially accounting for some of the observed discrepancies.

Grid-based Vlasov simulation of collisionless plasma expansion

Summary: Grid-based Vlasov simulations are used to re-evaluate the one-dimensional collisionless plasma expansion into vacuum, eliminating statistical noise in particle-based methods. The expansion generates ion-acoustic rarefaction wave mode and electron Langmuir wave mode propagating into the unperturbed plasma upstream. Assumption of isothermal electron fluid in classical expansion solution is accurate within self-similar expansion region but fails due to electron timescale perturbations in both the upstream and downstream.
